Discrete Random Variables & PDs - Tutorial 1

The document is a tutorial on business statistics focusing on discrete and binomial probability distributions. It includes various questions requiring calculations of probabilities, averages, variances, and the determination of constants for probability functions. The tutorial covers practical applications using data from the Malawi Bureau of Standards and scenarios involving hiring probabilities.

BUSINESS STATISTICS

General Discrete & Binomial PDs

Tutorial #1 Date: July 8, 2025

Question One
The probability distribution of a discrete random variable X is
x 3 x
1 3
f ( x)  C x    
3
, x  0,1,2,3.
4 4
a) Compute P(X = 2) = f(2).
b) Find the probability that X assumes a value equal to or less than 3.

Question Two
Records from the Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) show that when conducting
inspections in shops, 𝑋 items will be found expired. The following table gives the
distribution of expired items found during an inspection.

x 2 3 4 5 6
P(x) 0.05 0.25 0.3 0.16 0.24

Find the:
a) Probability of finding more than two but less than 5 expired items.
b) Average number of expired items per inspection.
c) Standard deviation of the number of expired items.

Question Three
From the MBS records, a student has concluded that 25% of items on display in
shops are expired. Suppose you randomly inspect 5 items from a shop, complete
the following table given that X is the number of expired items.

x 0 1 2 3 4 5
P(x) 0.24

a) What is the probability that at most 4 items have expired?

b) Find E(X) and Var(X).
Question Four
Determine the value of  so that each of the following functions can serve as
probability distributions of the discrete random variable X:

a) f ( x)   ( x 2  4) for x  0,1,2,3

b) f ( x)  2C x 3C3 x for x  0,1,2

Question Five
National Bank of Malawi PLC is interviewing ten fresh Business Administration
graduate for internship positions. The probability of any given candidate being
hired is 0.3.

a) Write an expression that would evaluate the probability of hiring a certain

number of the candidates.
What is the probability that
b) none will be hired?
c) at least two will not be hired?

Question Six
A discrete random variable X has a probability function

kx, x  1,2,3,

P( X  x)  k ( x  1), x  4,5,
0,
 elsewhere
Find the value of the constant k and construct probability distribution of X.

Question Seven
A discrete random variable X has a probability function;

P( X  x) 4 C x k x (3k ) 4 x , x  0, 1, 2, 3, 4

a) Evaluate k.
Find
b) E(X)
c) Var(X)
End
