CHPTER = 1

LEARNING OBJECTIVES/IMPORTANT TERMS

Sports Management: Sports Management is the field of business dealing with sports and recreation. It
involves any combination of skills that correspond with planning, organizing, controlling, directing,
staffing, budgeting, evaluating of any organization or business within the sports field.

Functions of Sports Events Management: (1) Planning, (2) Organising, (3) Staffing, (4) Directing, (5)
Controlling.

Planning: Planning is a process of development a strategy to achieve desired objectives, to solve


problems and to facilitate action.

Various Committees to Organise Sports Tournaments: For good management, committees should be
classified into three parts:

(1) Pre meet organising committees.

(2) During meet organising committees.

(3) Post meet organising committees.

Fixture: In physical education, a fixture is the calendar or plan of sporting activities or matches that are
played against a team on a given date or time. The fixtures can include the names of the teams, the
opposing team's name, the match's time, the match's location, and so on.

Bye: A bye is a privilege offered to a team in the initial rounds of a game because of which that team
gets exempted from playing in the first round and directly enters the second round. While drawing the
fixture for teams competing if the number of teams is power of two e. 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, number of
teams competing is not power of two le. 6, 7, 9, 11, 12, 15 in that case bye will not be given. When the

Seeding: Seeding is a procedure by which good teams are placed in fixtures in such a way that stronger
teams do not meet each other at the very beginning of the tournament. Using the seeding method, to
know the performance and ranking of teams or players.

Knock-out Tournament: Knock-out Tournament is also known as Elimination Tournament and Olympic
System Tournament. In a Knock-out tournament, the team which is defeated once gets eliminated
immediately and will not be given another chance to play, but winner team continuous to play in this
tournament. There are mainly three types of this tournament:

(1) Single Knock-out Toumament (2) Double Knock-out Tournament

(3) Consolation Knock-out Tournament


League Tournament: League tournament is also known as Round Robin Tournament and Berger System
Tournament. In this type of tournament, all teams play against each other, team irrespective of winning
or losing (victory or defeat). It can be called the best type of tournament because it provides every team
with the opportunity to show its best performance. There are mainly two types of this tournament:

(1) Single League Tournament (2) Double League Tournament

Combination Tournament: Combination Tournament is usually conducted whenever matches are


played among the teams belonging to far away places or number of teams is large to save time and
money then teams are divided into few groups or zone. Usually, the following combination tournaments
are used:

(1) Knock-out-cum Knock-out (2) Knock-out-cum League

(3) League cum League (4) League cum Knock-out

Intramural: Intramural is derived from the Latin language word 'Intra' means 'within' and 'mural' means
'wall'. These activities are conducted within the players of the same institution.

Objectives of Intramural: (1) To provide opportunity to every student to participate in games and
sports, (2) Allround development, (3) To enhance and introduce the sports and games, (4) To develop
the social qualities among the students, (5) To develop the quality of leadership and followership, (6) To
provide opportunity to organise the competitions, (7) To give chance for selecting good players, (8) To
provide fun, enjoyment and recreation.

Extramural: Extramural is derived from the Latin language's word 'Extra' means 'outside' and 'mural'
means 'wall'. Those activities which are performed outside the walls of an institution
school/organisation are known as extramural.

Objectives of Extramural: (1) To provide experience to students, (2) To broaden the base of sports, (3)
To provide appropriate knowledge of sports techniques, (4) To develop sportsmanship, (5) To develop
toughness.

Community Sports Program: Community sports are organised physical activities that are based in
community, school and local sport organisations. Community sports programs are those which are not
usually related to competitions. The programs have various objectives creating awareness, creating a
sense of integration among people and raising funds for charitable organizations.

List of Various Community/Specific Sports Program: These programs include Sports Day, Health Run,
Run for Fun, Run for Specific Cause & Run for Unity.
