Lesson planning Attention!
This material is to be printed and kept handy
to be used at all times when planning your lessons.
Step by step
Enhace your performance as a Washington Teacher
Do you want to know how?
*take the appropriate time to plan your lessons calmly at a favorable environment
*understand how the WSmart System runs; see the information below
▪ Diário de aula (lesson plan + homework + observações)
▪ Frequência
▪ Nota
▪ Follow up
*read the Introduction Pages attentively and thoroughly so that the course books can be deeply
explored and you can elevate your teaching performance; understand how and why:
▪ the Washington Methodology and Techniques work the human skills and the need for them
to be explored at all times in every class/lesson
▪ it is important to take the time to study and understand the sections of the course books so
that they can be highly explored and the students´ best performances can be accomplished
*plan the 2 classes of the week simultaneously to optimize time and maintain the flow of the unit
*the Teacher´s Book (TB) brings a standard number of classes for 1 semester , however plan the
semester accordingly to your school calendar and do not fall behind in your classes; adjust test
and English in Action Projects days along with the holidays.
Hints:
▪ the approximate average to conclude the ▪ teach students to avoid damaging their
presentation of a unit is 2 ½ classes of course book – do not bend it! Treat it with
1h15m each care
PART I – your understanding of the unit – WHAT TO TEACH
▪ Read and go through the whole content of the unit in the course book so that the ´what to
teach´ is clear: texts + images + exercises; your focus is to understand the unit as a whole.
▪ Check your own understanding of: vocabulary + content + meanings + teachings transmitted
+ pronunciation.
▪ Go thru the vocabulary (not only the lists but the texts and exercises).
▪ Listen to the audios and check: rhythm, fluency, pronunciation.
▪ Extra focus on the pronunciation of the words.
▪ Use the technology resources: RAV + Wweb + QRcodes interact with all the activities.
PART II – your planning of the lessons – HOW TO TEACH
1. the lesson plan on the Teacher´s book carefully and attentively; follow together with the
course book and be sure you have a 100% understanding of what to do. If not talk to your
coordinator way before giving the class.
note: once you read the information in the Lesson Plan, you know exactly how much needs to
be taught in every class and which parts of the unit will be part of the specific lesson
2. Study the course book content to be taught, now with the perspective of teaching this
content.
3. Plan the different dynamics you will use to present different parts of the lesson, always taking
the suggestions and ideas on the TB into account.
note: in case you wish to apply variations to the suggestions made on the TB this is the time,
however, only after going thru all the directions. These variations must comply with the
Washington Methodology and techniques.
4. Identify the topics to be used for students´ engagement (discussions, warm-up, expansion of
conversations, etc.) and how it will be done.
5. Select the vocabulary to be presented and explored – from the lists, texts, exercises and
extras.
reminder: always link the explanations with the topics and images from the book which will
be presented and discussed in the lesson; this will optimize the time allotted to the
presentation of the lesson and will facilitate the learning and memorization process,
contributing for a better understanding of the contents by the students
6. Carefully formulate the questions to be used along the presentations for the purposes of
elicitation, vocabulary presentation, debate, students’ interaction and knowledge checking
attention: teacher should not be an inquisitor and always allow the students to ask questions;
do not frustrate the students asking questions like ´do you know the meaning of… (a new
vocabulary)?´ once the vocabulary is yet to be taught
7. Plan on the drilling procedures for the practices of vocabulary, expressions, pronunciation,
etc….
reminder: avoid monotony, keep the practices alive, energetic, fun and meaningful
8. Come up with strategies to serve as transitions between different topics and sections as: cue
questions, linking topics, images, videos, etc…
9. Prepare not only questions but also comments to connect texts and images.
10. Elaborate different and meaningful dynamics and games that can serve for different
practices.
11. Include a proper usage for the audios in every class, always considering students´ level.
12. Use the technology resources appropriately – Wweb, RAV, QRcodes. Check the specific
section of the teacher´s book for those.
reminder: Wweb brings specific supporting materials and ideas for the teachers to use in
some lesson presentations. Check it out!
13. Plan how the understanding of the lesson will be checked.
14. Prepare the students for a precise completion of homework.
15. Feed the WSmart System with ´diario de aula´+ observations + follow up + presence and of
course when the case may be with the grades.
Important: not only complete the information but also analyze and keep track of the absence
numbers and low grades on the tests, as well as the class calendar not to be late along the
semester with the flow of the contents
BEAR IN MIND!
▪ nclude techniques such as ´role switching´ and ´look-up´ in the reading dynamics.
▪ Prepare to challenge students to improvise and dramatize scenes. Best if standing in
front of the whole group, speaking freely.
▪ Focus constantly on the retelling practice; this will facilitate the conversation as well as
the writing of summaries and different compositions.
▪ Always use the Teacher´s Book to plan your lessons.
PART III – revising and adjusting – WHAT HAS BEEN THE OUTCOME OF MY TEACHING.
▪ Students must have their performance accordingly to the CEFR band or even higher than
that. For further information check the TB.
▪ Students´ satisfaction is key: how happy, comfortable, adjusted, connected they are.
▪ Have you reached the goal previously planned?
▪ Are the students better in every way than the precious class?
PART IV – planning the next class – DIVERSIFICATION + ATTENTION TO KEEP UP WITH THE HIGH
PERFORMANCE
▪ Review the previous lesson plan for this class.
▪ Make the necessary adjustments to continue with the flow of the unit.
▪ Check students´ understanding as: fixation of content and vocabulary, acquisition of specific
grammar points, and others.
▪ Use the audio for refreshing their memory, or checking understanding, etc…
▪ Homework correction and necessary reviews.
▪ Present the new lesson.
▪ Feed the WSmart System with the updates and new information.
• Always keep the students’ frequency list updated;
• Fill out the ‘diário de aula’ as soon as class session ends;
• After the end of a test, do not take more than 72 hours to fill out the form ‘notas’ in
the system;
• Use the ‘students’ follow-up’ to communicate with school staff any issues related to a
student.
