Q1. How does a silk moth weave a cocoon?

Ans: Silk moth feeds on mulberry leaves. It secretes a liquid which changes into fine
thread. The moth weaves a cocoon around itself with this thread.

Q2. How is honey collected from a beehive?

Ans: Honey is collected from a beehive by lighting a fire under it. The heat and smoke
drives the bees out of the hive. The honey collectors then remove the hive and collect
the honey stored in it.

Q3. What is lac? State its four uses.

Ans: Lac insects secrete a semi-solid substance called lac. Its four uses are:

a) For making paints.


b) For making varnishes.
c) For making printing ink.
d) For making bangles.

Ans: When houseflies sit on garbage or animal excreta, they gather germs. They carry
disease causing germs on their feet and bodies. When these flies sit on any food item, they
transfer the germs to the food. This way, houseflies spread diseases.

Q5. How can we save ourselves from harmful insects?

Ans: We can save ourselves from harmful insects by using natural methods or by using
chemicals called insecticides or pesticides.

Ans: Here, the answer may vary from student to student but one common answer may be—

“By guiding him/her about the harmful effects of ‘junk’ and street food and by providing
tasty homemade dishes to him/her.

Ans: Honesty and truthfulness.
