He follows a fixed plan for managing his monthly income:
3

● He spends 1/10th of his income on food items.

● He spends 1/4th of his income on shopping with his family.
● Out of the remaining amount, he spends 1/5th on the education of his two children.
● The rest of the money goes into his savings.

Based on the above information, answer the following questions:

1. How much money does Rahul spend on food items?

3. How much money is left after spending on food and shopping?
4. How much money does he spend on his children's education?
5. How much does Rahul save every month?

21 Riya’s Math Practice Session

Riya is an enthusiastic Grade 8 student who loves solving math puzzles. One evening, she created a
game for herself using rational numbers. She chose three rational numbers: a=⅔ ,b= −5/6, c=½
.She started exploring the properties of rational numbers using these.

Here’s what she did:

1. She checked whether the sum of any two rational numbers was still a rational number.
2. She tried rearranging the numbers in addition and multiplication to see if the results
changed.
3. She applied distributive property using the expression:
a×(b+c) and compared it with a×b+a×c.
4. She looked for a number which, when added to a, gave 0.
5. She also looked for a number which, when multiplied with b, gave 1.
4

Based on Riya’s activity, answer the following questions:

1. Verify whether the closure property holds for addition of a and b
2. Check whether addition is commutative using a and c
3. Show that multiplication is associative using a,b and c.
4. Use the distributive property to verify: a×(b+c)=a×b+a×c.
5. What is the additive inverse of a?
6. What is the multiplicative inverse of b?
