SOLIDWORKS Exercise 12
Local Operations
Exercise 12: Creali11g separate so lid bodies within
Local n model all O\\ S rnodi!i calions to
Operations ens ily be made to one body without
affecting other bodi es or the part.
This modeling strategy is referred to
as the local operations technique. A
common exa mple or this technique is
a , miation on shell ing. The shelling
operation, by default, affects all
features of the solid body that
precede it. In this example, a shell ing problem will be solved using
Merge result and Combine.
This exercise reinforces the fo ll owing skills:
■ Multibody Parts on page 166
■ Me,ge Result on page 168
■ Combining Bodies on page 183
Units: millimeters
Procedure
1 Open the part Local Operations.
2 Shell part.
Add a 4mm shell that removes the bottom face.
3 Explore Results.
Click Section View fj).
Locate the section plane -42mm from
the Front Plane.
Notice in the section view that the
shell affects the entire part. We only
want it to affect the bottom plate.
In order to limit the shell to the bottom
plate, we will modify the features to
keep that area of the part as a separate
body.
Click OK to keep the section view
active.
Note In some cases, like this simple example, reordering the feature would
solve the problem. But on more complex models, reordering may not
be an option. Multibody tools can often provide an alternative solution.

After clearing the Merge result check box for the @ Shein
upper features, there are three separate bodies in
the part. The shell feature only affects the body it is applied to.
Note The solid body names are assumed from the last feature affecting the
body.
Merge Using What ifwe wanted a feature to merge with some bodies of the part, but
Feature Scope not others? To accomplish this, the Merge result option can be turned
on and Feature Scope can be used to limit which bodies are affected
by the feature. Any existing body that is not part of the Feature Scope is
ignored by the feature and will not be merged.
6 Merge the Rib_Under feature
using feature scope.
Edit the Rib_Under feature.
Click Merge result.
Under Feature Scope, click
