Advanced Lesson 1

The document outlines exercises for modeling components in SOLIDWORKS using in-context features and top-down assembly modeling. Exercise 1 focuses on creating a flange for the Oil Pan assembly, while Exercise 2 involves creating a Cover Plate component that relates to surrounding parts. Both exercises emphasize the importance of design intent and proper feature alignment within assemblies.

Exercise 1

SOLIDWORKS
In-context Features

Exercise1: In the Oil Pan Assembly, the Pipe

In-context component is already properly
Features positioned. However, there is no
corresponding flange on Oil Pan.
Your task is to model the flange
and holes as in-context features.

This lab reinforces the following

skills:

Adding Features In-context on

Units: mm

1 Open an assembly file.

Open the assembly Oil Pan Assy from folder InContextFeatures.
2 Edit Component.
Edit the Oil Pan component to add the necessary flange features.
The design intent is as follows:

1. Where the Oil Pan flange meets the Pipe flange the features should
share the same contour.
2. The Oil Pan flange requires 3° of draft.
3. The holes in the Oil Pan for the bolts and pipe are the same
diameter and position as the matching features of the Pipe.
4. The fillet radius is 2mm.

3 Save and close all files.

1 Open an assembly file.

Open the assembly TOP DOWN ASSY from folder Top Down Assy.
2 Insert a New Part component.
Insert a new part component, locating
the Front Plane of the new part at the

3 In context features.
The design intent for this part is as follows:
1. Cover Plate must update with the inner contour of Main Body.
2. Cover Plate must relate to OD on Ratchet.
3. Cover Plate must relate to OD on Wheel.
