About Your Subject


Your course focuses on the concrete application to everyday life occurrences of the
theories, methodologies and principles acquired from the social sciences. It provides basic
knowledge, orientation, and techniques about communication, counseling and social work. It
offers a concise introduction and skills used in social works, communication and counselling.

Grading System
The grading system is as follows:
25 % - Written works
45 % - Performance tasks
30 % - Quarter Exam
100 % - Total

CONTENT STANDARDS: The learners demonstrate an understanding of disciplines of


counseling, professionals and practitioners in counseling.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS: The learners shall be able to demonstrate a high level of
understanding of the basic concepts of counseling, undertake
participant observation (e.g., a day in a life of a counselor) to
adequately document and critique their roles, functions, and
competencies.
MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING identify the goals and scope of counseling; and explain the
COMPETENCIES principles of counseling

At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:


A. discuss the meaning, goals, scope, principles and core values of counseling;
B. demonstrate a high level of understanding of the basic disciplines of counseling;
and
C. value the importance of counseling.

Counseling is a challenging career path yet it is likewise interesting. Imagine yourself equipped
with gears for understanding, linking and assisting people. Isn’t it fascinating to be an instrument
in advancing self-awareness and in enhancing capacity to relate with others, manage with
stress, and resolve problems?

Counseling happens when a person who is distress asks for help and permits another person
to enter into a kind of connection with him/her. It is then expected that he will listen, he will
allow him/her to speak and will not condemn or criticize his/her sharing.

GOALS OF COUNSELING

1. DEVELOPMENTAL GOALS - It assists meeting or advancing the client’s human growth


and development including social, emotional, cognitive
and physical awareness.
2. PREVENTIVE GOALS - It helps the client avoid some undesired outcome.
3. ENHANCEMENT GOALS - It enhance special skills and abilities
4. REMEDIAL GOALS - It assists client to overcome and treat undesirable
development.
5. EXPLORATORY GOALS - It examines options, testing of skills, trying new and different
activities.

6. REINFORCEMENT GOALS - It helps client recognize that what they are doing, thinking
and feeling is fine.

7. COGNITIVE GOALS - It involves acquiring the basic foundation of learning and


cognitive skills.
8. PHYSIOLOGICAL GOALS - It involves acquiring the basic understanding and habits for
good health.
9. PSYCHOLOGICAL GOALS -It aids in developing good social interaction skills, learning
emotional control and developing positive self-concepts.

Other goals are mentioned in your book such as

 gaining insights,
 relating with others because it is either you are experiencing the same or you have
overcome it,
 self-awareness – in a way that you become more capable of understanding
yourself thus,
 there is a sense of acceptance because you are able to develop a positive attitude
towards yourself.

SCOPE OF COUNSELING

Counseling has a wide range of scope. Counseling can be done individually and by group. All
of which caters issues. Some of which are depression, sexual abuse, anxiety, gender,
relationships, ideology, family issues such as divorce, marriage, parenting and a lot more. To
