Prerequisites:

Basic knowledge of Digital Electronics

Objectives:

Digital technology are now integral part of an Industry . Digital circuits

are used in various day to day applications .The Digital System will
perform highly complex tasks with high reliability and speed . The
course enables the students to learn the principles used in Digital
System Design .
Course Objective: The goal of this course is to provide a knowledge and

understanding on thedesign and implementation of digital


circuits and systems .

Learning Outcomes:

The course would equip students to


* Learn digital logic circuits

* Design a digital module with Combinational andsequential

logic components to be able to address any problem in


applicable domain.
* Design a digital logic circuit that meets required performance

Specifications with resource minimization .

* Formulate logic and design circuits for practical problems

Syllabus:

SWITCHING FUNCTIONS :
Review of Boolean Algebra , realization of logic Gates by
using Diode logic and Resistor transistor logic , Generation
I of switching equations from truth tables , minimization of
Boolean expression using Karnaugh-map method (up to 5 8
variables), Quine-McClusky method

COMBINATIONAL LOGIC DESIGN


II Design procedure , Implementation using SSI , MSI and
LSI approach (i) Design of Parallel Adder and
Subtractor circuit ,Encoders , 4-input Priority Encoder ,
Decoders , combinational logic Implementation ,,Design of
code converter : Binary to Gray code , Binary to BCD
(ii) Multiplexers , Application of multiplexer as Logic
Function Generator, Demultiplexers, modular design using
IC chips , Magnitude Comparator, Hazards and Hazard
free realization
(iii) Programmable Logic Devices , ROM organization , 10
Programmable Array Logic, Programmable Logic Array
and combinational circuit implementation

(i) Classification of sequential circuits , Mealy and Moore

1. Design and implement a code converter for 4 bit Binary to Grey code conversion
2. Design a Decimal to BCD convertor and implement using combinational logic.
3. Design and implement Magnitude comparator
4. Design and implement full Adder using 4X1 multiplexer.
5. Design and implement full Subtractor using 4X1 multiplexer.
6. Design and implement a Modulo 5 synchronous counter using JK flip-flops.
7. Design a 4 bit sequence generator using JK Flip Flops.
8. To Construct & test 4 bit D/A converter using IC.
9. To Construct & test 4 bit A/D converter using IC.
10. Design 4 bit up/down counter using T-Flip Flops.
