Memo LB 146

The memorandum discusses the implications of the atomic bomb's use during World War II, highlighting that 120,000 Purple Heart Medals remained unused by 2003. It argues that the bomb demonstrated America's power, instilling fear in the world, and suggests that Japan would not have surrendered without it. The document concludes that the atomic bombings made it clear to Japan that continued resistance would lead to further devastation.

Answers
1. The evidence for this is that there were still 120 000
Purple Heart Medals left over in 2003 (i.e. they were
not all used). (MO)
2. It was psychological because it showed the rest of
the world left behind who ultimately had the greatest
power (the USA) and that one should fear them
because of this great power. (MO)
3. Source F is saying that the Japanese would never
have backed down so this supports America’s argument
that dropping the bomb was the only way to end the
war. (HO)
4. The dropping of the atomic bomb made the Japanese
realise that if they continued to fight, they would not
win as there would be more bombs to follow. (MO)
