English Grammar: Conjunctions (Short Notes)
What is a Conjunction?
A conjunction is a word used to join words, phrases, or clauses.
Types of Conjunctions:
1. Coordinating Conjunctions (FANBOYS):
- and, but, or, nor, so, for, yet
- Example: I wanted to go, but it was raining.
2. Subordinating Conjunctions:
- because, although, since, if, when, though, unless, while
- Example: I will come if it stops raining.
3. Correlative Conjunctions (in pairs):
- either...or, neither...nor, both...and, not only...but also
- Example: Not only she sings, but also dances.
Tips:
- Coordinating joins equal parts.
- Subordinating joins dependent to main clause.
- Correlative always come in pairs.
