Industry Collaboration Guide: Data Science
Capstone Project Overview
DESCRIPTION:
The Data Science Capstone is a two-semester, project-based course offered by the Department of Computer Science
at the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering, Indiana University.
It offers clients – including faculty and industry partners – with the opportunity to collaborate with a team of senior
data science students to address real-world challenges using advanced data science techniques. Partner
organizations propose a problem and provide a dataset, and student teams work through the full data science
lifecycle—from problem definition and data analysis to modeling and final presentation—delivering actionable
insights and solutions tailored to the partner’s needs.
PROJECT TIMELINE:
The two-semester project runs through the Fall and Spring semesters. For the 2025-2026 academic year, the
students will begin working on their projects on 25th August 2025 and submit their deliverables by 1st May 2026.
CLIENT EXPECTATIONS:
Clients are expected to
• Provide the necessary data within the first six weeks of the project (negotiable). The data can be
anonymized based upon your organizations data policy and can be in any digital format.
• Assist students with access to data or resources if not publicly available.
• Assign a point of contact who can dedicate at least one hour per week to the project and make or relay
project-related decisions.
SCOPE:
The scope of the problem should be appropriate for a team of two students to address over the course of two
academic semesters.
DELIVERABLES:
Deliverables will be decided between students and the clients. Following are the most common types of deliverables
for data science projects:
• A report summarizing key insights and knowledge gained
• Trained machine learning model(s)
• Intermediate and final reports
• Code and documentation (e.g. GitHub repository or notebook)
REQURIED MEETINGS:
Most meetings can take place via Zoom or Teams. The below schedule should work fairly well for most projects:
• Kickoff meeting within the first two weeks of the Fall semester
• Biweekly check-ins throughout the project
• Timely responses to student queries via email
NDA
Students should be able to highlight their contributions in professional portfolios, provided this aligns with the
terms of any NDA. This supports student career development while showcasing the partner’s commitment to
innovation and talent development.
