holes, porosity, shrinkage defects, cracks, or other
injurious defects. They shall be well cleaned.
7.2 Pressure castings shall not be plugged,
welded, burned-in, or impregnated
7.3 Wall thicknesses and sections shall meet
or exceed the minimum requirements of appli-
cable codes.
8. Sampling and Number of Tests
8.1 One chemical analysis shall be made from
each lot of metal poured.
8.2 One mechanical property test shall be
made from each lot of metal poured.
8.2.1 Ifany test specimen shows defective ma-
chining or reveals casting defects, it may be dis-
carded and replaced with another specimen rep-
resentative of the same lot,
8.3 At the option of the manufacturer a lot
shall consist of:
8.3.1 All of the metal poured from a single
furnace or crucible melt, or
8.3.2 All of the metal poured from a contin-
uous melting furnace between charges, or
8.3.3 Allof the metal poured from an individ-
ual melting unit or group of melting units, or
continuous melting furnaces having a uniform
melting stock, operating during the course of one-
half shift, not to exceed 5h.
9. Test Methods
9.1 The sample for chemical analysis shall be
taken by drilling or cutting the chemical test
coupon in such a manner as to be representative
of the entire cross section. For the purpose of
analysis only, the chemical test coupon may con-
sist of a tension test coupon, or a separate chem-
ical analysis test sample.
9.2 The chemical analysis shall be made in
accordance with Methods E 54, Methods E 62,
or Methods E 478.
9.3 The chemical composition may also be
determined by the emission methods, but should
a dispute arise concerning the chemical compo-
sition, the wet chemical methods contained in
the 1982 Annual Book of ASTM Standards, Part
12, shall be used as the umpire methods.
9.4 The tension test coupons and specimens
for tension tests shall be prepared in accordance
with Practice B 208.
9.5 The tension tests shall be made in accord-
ance with 4.1 of Methods E 8.
9.6 In addition to the tensile test required in
106

5.1, test material may be cut from the castings,
The mechanical properties and the location from
which the test material will be removed shall be
agreed upon between the manufacturer and the
purchaser.
10. Significance of Numerical Limits
10.1 For purposes of determining compliance
with the specified limits for requirements of the
properties listed in the following table, an ob-
served value or a calculated value shall be
rounded as indicated in accordance with the
rounding method of Recommended Practice

11. Rejection and Rehearing
11.1 Castings that show injurious defects re-
vealed by machining operations subsequent to
acceptance may be rejected, and if rejected, the _
foundry shall be notified.
12. Certification
12.1 Records of tension tests results and
chemical analyses shall be systematically made
and maintained and shall be the basis for cert
fication, In lieu of the manufacturer's certifica-
tion and upon written request on the purchase
order by the purchaser, these records may be
examined by the purchaser or his accredited rep-_
resentative, upon the manufacturer's premises.
12.2 Upon written request on the purchase -
order, the purchaser or his accredited represent-
ative shall have the right of entry to foundries _
and testing laboratories to assure himself that the -
facilities and procedures of the manufacturer of
the component castings are suitable as a basis for
production of castings and for preparation of
certification as described in 12.1
12.3 Component-part alloy castings as made _
to this specification are manufactured in advance
and supplied from stock. The manufacturer
therefore maintains a general quality certification
of all castings, without specific record or date of
cast of a specific component part. When com:
ponent parts are required to specific dates orih
peats, a supplementary agreement on the pur-
chase order is necessary between the purchaser
and the manufacturer.
12.4 When specified on the purchase order
the manufacturer shall furnish to the purchaser
a certificate stating that samples of the material
have been sampled, tested, and inspected in ac-
cordance with this specification and have met
the requirements.
