BERHAMPUR
Assignment 3, Semester August–September, 2021
Course Name: Linear Algebra Course Code: MTH 201
Date: 24-09-2021 Instructor: Ratna Pal

1. (a) Let V = {(x, y) ∈ R2 }. Define

(x, y) + (x1 , y1 ) = (x + x1 , y + y1 ) and c(x, y) = (cx, y) where c ∈ R.
Is V a vector space over R?
(b) Is Rn with the following operations form a vector space over R:
x + y = x + y and c . x = −c.x where c ∈ R?

(c) Show that V = {f : R → R continuous} form a vector space over R with usual addition
and scalar multiplication. Further, if we take V to be the set of all functions from R to
R which are discontinuous at least at a point in R, does V form a vector space over R
with usual addition and scalar multiplication?
2. Let F = R/C and let n ≥ 2 be a positive integer. Let V be the vector space of all n × n
matrices over F. Which of the following sets A of matrices in V are subspaces of V ?
(a) all invertible A;
(b) all non-invertible A;
(c) all A such that AB = BA for some fixed B;
(d) all A such that A2 = A.
3. (a) Let S = {(a, b), (c, d) ∈ R2 }. Show that S is linearly independent if and only if ad−bc 6=
0.
(b) Let V be the vector space of all functions from R to R. Show that the following pairs
of functions are linearly independent.
(a){t, t4 }, (b){cos t, sin t} (c) {et , t}.
4. Find at least two maximal linearly independent subsets of

6. Let V be a vector space and W1 , W2 ≤ V . Prove that if W1 ∪ W2 ≤ V , then either W1 ⊆ W2
or W2 ⊆ W1 .
7. Let M3×3 (R) be the set of all 3 × 3 matrices over R. Show that the set of all trace zero
symmetric matrices S3×3 (R) is a subspace of M3×3 (R). Find a basis for S3×3 (R) and then
extend it to a basis of M3×3 (R).
