Automatic Water Level Control System Using Relays

This project details the design and simulation of an automatic water level control system using relays and indicator LEDs to manage a water pump. The system effectively automates water filling by activating the pump based on water levels indicated by the LEDs, demonstrating the reliability of relays in automation. Testing confirmed the system's functionality, highlighting the importance of precise wiring and troubleshooting in circuit design.

Abstract—This project presents the design and simulation of A. Indicator Functions

an automatic water filling system using relays. The system utilizes
indicator LEDs and electrically operated relays to automate the • Red LED: Indicates a critically low water level, requiring
operation of a water pump. The objective is to understand the immediate attention.
role of relays in automation and their interaction with indicator • Yellow LED: Signals a low level, triggering the relay to
lights to signal different water levels. The results demonstrate
the effectiveness of relays in controlling an automated system. activate the water pump.
• Green LED: Indicates that the water level is sufficient

Automation plays a crucial role in modern engineering,
particularly in fluid control systems. This project focuses on
designing an automatic water level control system using relays,
where LEDs serve as indicators for different water levels. The
system ensures efficient water management by activating a
pump when necessary and turning it off when the desired level
is reached.
II. S YSTEM D ESIGN
The system consists of a 24V power supply, three indicator
LEDs (red, yellow, and green), relays, and a water pump.
The relays function as electrically controlled switches that
automate the pump’s operation based on water level indicators.

B. Circuit Implementation

A relay was connected to each indicator, ensuring proper

control of the pump. When the yellow LED turned on, the
relay activated the pump. Once the green LED was triggered,
the relay cut off the pump’s power supply to prevent overflow.

III. T ESTING AND R ESULTS

The system was tested under different conditions:

• When the water level was critically low, the red LED
turned on, but the pump remained off.
• As the level dropped below the threshold, the yellow LED
turned on, activating the pump.
• As the tank filled, the green LED illuminated, shutting
off the pump.
The system functioned as expected, effectively automating the
water filling process.
IV. R EFLECTIONS
This project reinforced the importance of relays in au-
tomation and highlighted the need for precise wiring. Initial
challenges included unexpected relay behavior due to incorrect
connections, requiring troubleshooting. Through systematic
debugging, the correct functionality was achieved. The final
system successfully demonstrated a practical application of
relays in water level automation.
V. C ONCLUSION
The designed system efficiently controlled a water pump
using relays and indicator LEDs. The results validate the ef-
fectiveness of relays in automation, proving their reliability in
practical applications. This project provided valuable insights
into circuit design, troubleshooting, and real-world automation
solutions.
