Google Pioneering the Future of Technology


i. INTRODUCTION
Google is one of the most well-known companies in the world, changing how we find and use information. This report
looks at how Google began, its history, and key moments in its growth. It will also propose a new design for Google’s logo
to represent its progress and future while staying true to its identity. This introduction sets the stage to explore Google’s
story and how a new logo could reflect its evolution.

ii. GOOGLE’S FOUNDERS AND MANAGERS


The founders of Google, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, met while pursuing their Ph.D. degrees at Stanford University in the
mid-1990s. During their first encounter, Sergey Brin was tasked with showing Larry Page around the campus. Despite
initial differences, the two soon collaborated on a research project that laid the foundation for Google. Their project focused
on developing a search engine that ranked web pages based on relevance, using an innovative system they called PageRank.

Managers

Chief Executive Officer (CEO): Sundar Pichai has served as CEO of Google since 2015 and also leads Alphabet Inc.,
Google's parent company.

Chief Financial Officer (CFO): Anat Ashkenazi assumed the role of CFO and Senior Vice President of Google and
Alphabet on July 31, 2024. She succeeded, who transitioned to President and Chief Investment Officer of Alphabet and
Google.

President: Ruth Porat, formerly the CFO, now serves as President and Chief Investment Officer of Alphabet and Google,
focusing on the company's investment strategies and other business operations. (McPherson, 2010)

iii. BEGINNINGS
From the garage to the Googleplex. The story of Google began in 1995 when Larry Page and Sergey Brin met at Stanford
University. Together, they developed a search engine called Backrub, later renamed Google, aiming to organize the world’s
information and make it accessible to everyone. In 1998, they secured $100,000 in funding, enabling them to officially
establish Google in a garage in Menlo Park owned by Susan Wojcicki, rented to them for $1,700 per month. The company
embraced unconventional methods, such as using a server built from Lego bricks, and launched its first creative logo to
announce their participation in the Burning Man Festival. As the company expanded rapidly, Google moved to its current
headquarters, the "Googleplex," where they continued to innovate.

iv. HEADQUARTERS
Google’s headquarters, also known as the Googleplex, is located in
Mountain View, California. It’s a vibrant and innovative campus that
reflects the company’s culture and values. The Googleplex, Google's
headquarters, is renowned for its innovative and playful design. Here are
some key aspects of its design:

Campus Layout:

• Diverse Workspaces: Google offers a variety of workspaces,


including traditional offices, quiet rooms, phone booths, and standing

desks. This allows employees to choose the environment that best Figure 1

• Colorful and Playful: The Googleplex features vibrant designs. This


creates a fun and inspiring atmosphere, as shown in figure 1.

• Transportation Options: Google provides free shuttle buses, bike-sharing programs, and electric vehicle charging
stations to encourage sustainable transportation.
• The Googleplex's design reflects Google's culture of innovation, creativity, and employee well-being. It's a place
where people can work, collaborate, and have fun. (Levy, 2021)

v. GOOGLE CONTRIBUTION TO ENGINEERS


Google has made a massive impact on engineering, transforming the way engineers work, learn, and innovate. Its
groundbreaking technologies, like search engine advancements, have made finding information across the vast internet
easier than ever. Innovations in AI, machine learning, and cloud computing have empowered engineers to create and deploy
applications more efficiently. Google has also introduced essential tools like Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, etc.) to
streamline collaboration. And, of course, its biggest product, Android, has revolutionized software engineering, powering
millions of devices worldwide every day.

vi. LOGO REDESIGN


We believed that Google needed a new logo as it has been years without any change so we took the
initiative to design a fresh new look. We maintained the classic Google colors to help preserve the
brand identity that google spent years building while updating the design to be more vibrant and fun
to better represent the company. Also, we decided to hide the search symbol in the design to help
emphasize Google's mission to become the world’s leading search engine. Furthermore, the white
background helps the color to appear more vibrant. Overall, we believe that the new logo appeals
more to younger generations (refer to figure 4). The colors in Google's new logo (blue, red, yellow,
and green) are meant to convey a sense of approachability and friendliness. Blue signifies trust, red
represents energy, yellow suggests optimism, and green indicates growth and innovation. This
thoughtful color scheme helps to reinforce Google's brand identity. Figure 2

vii. HOMEPAGE REDESIGN


The current Google homepage, while iconic, focuses heavily
on minimalism. While this simplicity is functional, it leaves
room for enhancements to improve usability, interactivity,
and visual engagement. Our redesign introduces modern
elements that make the homepage more user-friendly,
visually appealing, interactive while staying true to Google's
innovative spirit. (refer to figure 3)

How My Design is Better

-Enhanced User Interaction:

The addition of the "Gemini" chatbot brings an interactive


assistant directly to the homepage. This feature helps users

navigate and find answers efficiently and reduces time spent The new homepage proposal

-Improved Visual Engagement:

The addition of illustrations featuring diverse individuals creates a welcoming, human-centered approach.

-Simplified Navigation:

We maintained the focus on Google's core apps (Gmail, YouTube, Drive,


etc.) by organizing them at the bottom of the page.
This makes it easier for users to access their most-used
tools without additional steps.

-Color Palette:

We chose blue as the main color for the homepage because it’s often associated with trust, reliability, and innovation-
qualities that align with Google’s brand. Blue is also a calming and approachable color, making the interface feel user-
friendly and inviting. Additionally, it’s a color that works well with Google’s vibrant secondary colors, creating a balanced
and modern look.

viii. CONCLUSION
In conclusion, Google has become a global leader, known for its reliability, accessibility, and user-centered approach. The
platform’s simplicity and effectiveness make it easy for anyone to access information, while its powerful design ensures
smooth and fast performance. Through its contributions to the engineering field, Google has played a role in shaping new
standards for technology, helping drive progress across various industries. As it continues to grow, Google remains
dedicated to offering solutions that are not only efficient but also reliable, cementing its place as an essential resource for
people worldwide.
