Technical Definition

Firearm is a device than can be used as weapon that fires either single or
multiple projectiles propelled at a high velocity by the gases produced through rapid
confined burning of a propellant .
Legal Definition
Legally speaking, Firearm refers to any handheld or portable weapon,
whether a small arm or light weapon, that expels or is designed to expel a bullet, shot,
slug, missile or any projectile, which is discharged by means of expansive force of
gases from burning gunpowder or other form of combustion or any similar instrument or
implement. For purposes of this Act, the barrel, frame or receiver is considered a rearm.

CLASSIFICATION OF FIREARM
A. HANDGUNS
B. RIFLES
C. SHOTGUN
1. handguns- is a firearm designed to be usable with only one [Link] generally
have two actions the semi automatic and the revolving action.
a. semiautomatic- a pistol has a single [Link] time the trigger is
pulled, a cartridge is fired ,the empty case is automatically extracted and
ejected ,the hammer is cocked, and a new cartridge is loaded into the chamber.

b. Revolving action/revolver- it has a rotating cylinder containing a number

of chambers these are usually five or six chambers. The action of the trigger or
hammer will line up the chamber with the barrel and firing pin. Releasing the
cylinder latch allows the cylinder to swing out for loading, unloading and
inspection. The revolver has two action it is either the single or the double action
on a single action the trigger has a single function while on the double action is
the trigger function as to cock the hammer and to released it.\

2. rifle- are long barreled firearms with grooves cut into the bore of the [Link]
grooves are known as rifling and where rifles get there names. Rifles are very common
firearms and excellent to use in hunting games and shooting targets which are far away
because of its accurate it is considered as an accurate [Link] is also considered as
high power firearms and as such very far range.

3. Shotgun-it is usually designed to fire from the shoulder, which uses the energy of
the explosive in the fixed shells to fire a number of small spherical pellets called shot or
a solid [Link] shotgun shot spreads out when it is fired, making smaller and
moving targets and came easier to [Link] bore the shotgun is smooth and shotgun
ammunition is sized by gauge instead of caliber found in rifles and handguns

BASIC COMPONENT OF FIREARM

[Link]-the metal tube of a weapon made of high grade carbon steel, cylindrical in
shape through which the bullet is given a velocity and direction of the flight and
concentrate gasses to propel the [Link] is also considered as a complete firearm.
A. Muzzle-forward end or mouth of the barrel.
B. Bore-interior of the barrel where the bullets glides through.
C. Rifling-helical or spiral grooves and ridges along the bore and the surface.
Lands-ridges or raised portion between grooves, the caliber of the weapon is measured
from land to the opposite land, it is also engraves or cuts the bullet jacket to the firing as
it travels.
Grooves-canal or cut out portion of the rifling.
.
D. chamber-enlarged portion of the rear of the barrel where the cartridge is
placed in position to be fired.

2. BREECH-an open space of the rear end portion of the barrel which recesses to fit a
lock mechanism usually bolt so as to seal the chamber and prevent the escape of
gasses.
3. FIRING MECHANISM-device used to ignite the primer.
A. free floating- e.g. M16 rifle
B. Percussion-there is a spring on the rear portion of pin pushing it forward
C. Inertia-there is shortened pin in the housing pushing the firing pin rearward that
keeps it moving in one direction unless affected by an outside forces. E.g pistol
cal.45
4. RECEIVER- houses or holds other working components /parts to form or more
functional unit.
Smooth bore firearms-A smooth-bore weapon is one that has a barrel without rifling.
Smooth-bores range from handheld firearms to powerful tank guns and large artillery
mortars. The majority of shotguns are smooth-bores and the terms "shotgun" and
"smooth-bore" can be synonymous.
Rifle bore firearms-it has shallow spiral grooves cut inside the barrel to impart a spin to
the projectile, thus stabilizing it in flight. A rifled barrel imparts much greater accuracy to
a projectile, as compared with a smooth bore barrel.
CLASSIFICATION OF WEAPONS
Operations
A. manually operated-firearms which pass cycle of operation
accomplish manually except firing. E.G. spring field
B. Gas operated-firearms characterized by the presence of gas cylinder and piston gas
or gas tube only.
1. impringing type-pistol and operating rod are integral.
2. Tappet type-piston and rod are separated.
3. Expansion-cut off spindle valve is used to control flow of gas es for launching a
grenade.
4. Direct gas action-the action that makes gas tapped from the barrel along the
tube to the breech area where it acts directly on the bolt. E.g M16
USE
A. Hand weapon-weapons designed to fire with one hand. E.g pistol
B. Shoulder weapon-weapons which are designed to be fired from the shoulder.
e.g rifle
C. Crew served weapon-weapons that are designed to fire
by two or more person.

FEEDING

Recoil movement-the rearward movement of some parts due

To explosion and reaction of the forward trust of the projectile
and gases.
A. Unlocking
B. Extracting
C. Ejecting
D. Cocking
Counter recoil-the forward movement of some parts due to expansion of the
compressed recoil spring.
A. Feeding
B. Chambering
C. Locking
D. Firing

MALFUNCTIONS AND STOPPAGES

Malfunction-failure of weapon to functions satisfactorily without the cycle of operations.

1. rub away-noncontinuous fire even after the release of trigger.
2. Cock off-premature fire due to heat of the barrel.
3. Hang-fire delayed ignition of the primer due to ammunition defect.
4. Sluggish-slow movement of some parts due to excessive dirt.
5. Misfire-failure of the ammunition to fire
Stoppages-the unintentional interruption in the cycle of operation like failure to fire,
cock of to feed.
Immediate action- the unhesitating application of remedy to reduce the stoppage
without investigating the cause.
Remedial action-the continuing effort to determine the cause of stoppage, application
of remedy to clear the stoppage once it has been identified and return the weapon to
operation.
