Types of Light Pollution
• Urban sky glow - brightening of the
night sky over urban inhabited
areas.
• Light Trespass - The falling of light in
an area where it is not intended or
needed
• Glare - Excessive brightness of light,
causing visual discomfor t and
disability.
• Uplight - directed toward the open
sky, causing a very strong, localised
form of light pollution
• Clutter - refers to an excessive
grouping of lights, commonly found
in over-lit areas
• Effects on Health —
• Interferes with Circadian rhythm
• Lowers Melatonin Production
• Also linked to Cardiovascular disease
and cancer
• Effect on Plants —
• Disturbs photoperiodism of Plants -
pigment formation, leave shedding and
the onset and breaking of bud dormancy
• Prevent owering & pollination - hampers
reproduction
fl
• Effects on Animals —
• Decline of Insect population
• ‘Trap Effect’ in Pollinators
• Migratory Birds and Turtle gets confused
on their navigator pathway
• Af fects animal behaviour - such as
migration patterns, wake-sleep habits, and
habitat formation
• Effect on Economy —
• Wastage of Resources
• High Energy Consumption - High Emissions
BORTLE SCALE
• Measuring the quality (brightness) of the night sky for a particular location
• There are nine levels to the Bortle scale with Class 9 being the most extreme amount of
light pollution.
