⚖️Measure It!

Exploring Mass, Volume, and Gases

Grade Level: 5
Topic: Measuring Mass, Volume, and Gas
In this activity, students will measure the mass and volume of solids, liquids, and gases using
various tools and methods. They will record their findings and reflect on the properties of
matter.

🧰 Materials Needed
- Measuring scale fruit, etc.)
- Measuring cups or graduated cylinders - Clear plastic container or beaker
- Water - Balloons
- Small solid objects (toy, stone, eraser, - Large bowl or bucket of water

🔍 Part 1: Measuring Solid Objects

🔧 INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Gather all the materials listed below before starting.
2. For solids:

 Use a measuring scale to weigh each object. Record the mass.

 Fill a measuring cup or beaker with water and record its volume.
 Submerge the solid object and record the new volume. Subtract to find the object's
volume.

Use a measuring scale to find the mass. Use water displacement to find the volume.

💧 Part 2: Measuring Liquids

🔧 INSTRUCTIONS:

For liquids:

 Weigh each container. Record the mass.

 Pour each liquid into a measuring cup to determine its volume.
 Weigh the filled container and subtract the container's mass to get the liquid's mass.
(subtract the container's empty mass).

Part 3: Measuring Gases

🧪 ACTIVITY: Trapped Air

1. Weigh the inflated ballon. Record the mass.
2. Blow up a balloon. Do not tie it yet.

3. Pour water into the container. Record the volume.

4. Estimate the volume by:

 Submerging the balloon in a water-filled container and measuring displacement.

 Or, measure its circumference and compare with a chart.
 Record your measurement and observations below.

🧠 Reflection Questions
1. Which objects had the highest mass?

2. Which objects had the highest volume?

3. Did any object have a large volume but low mass? What does that tell you?

4. Why do liquids need containers to hold their shape?

5. How did you measure the volume of irregular solids?

6. What challenges did you face measuring gases? How did you solve them?
