ZIMBABWE SCHOOL EXAMINATIONS COUNCIL (ZIMSEC)

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PAPER 1 – COMPOSITION


ORDINARY LEVEL
Time: 1 hour 30 minutes

INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
1. Answer one question from Section A and the compulsory question in Section B.
2. Write your compositions neatly and legibly.
3. Begin each answer on a new page.
4. Pay attention to grammar, spelling, punctuation, and paragraphing.
5. Your work will be marked for both language and content.

SECTION A (Choose ONE question)


Write a composition of 350–450 words on one of the following:
1. Write a story that begins with the words:
“It was a bright and sunny morning when everything suddenly went wrong…”
2. Write about a day you will never forget.
3. Describe your favourite place at home and explain why you love spending time there.
4. Describe a busy market in your area.
5. Should school uniforms be banned? Give reasons for your answer.
6. Children should not be given mobile phones before the age of 15. What is your opinion?
7. Write a story entitled: “The Stranger at the Gate.”

SECTION B (Compulsory)
You are the head prefect at your school. Write a speech that you will deliver during assembly,
encouraging learners to take good care of school property.
In your speech, include the following points:
- Greet your audience politely.
- State the purpose of your speech.
- Explain the importance of taking care of school property.
- Mention some of the things learners often damage (e.g., desks, toilets, textbooks).
- Say how this affects the school and other students.
- Give suggestions on how to protect school property.
- End with a strong and respectful message.
