Lect - 15 Computer Network and LAN

A computer network consists of interconnected devices that communicate to share resources and data, utilizing physical cables or wireless technologies. A Local Area Network (LAN) connects devices within a limited area, allowing for efficient resource sharing and high-speed communication. Key features of LAN include limited coverage, high-speed data transfer, private ownership, and centralized management.

Computer Network:

A computer network is a system of interconnected computing devices that communicate with

each other to share resources, data, and applications. These connections can be established
through physical cables, wireless technologies, or a combination of both.

Key Components of a Computer Network:

1. Nodes: Devices like computers, smartphones, or servers.

2. Network Interface Cards (NICs): Hardware enabling devices to connect to the network.
3. Transmission Media: Cables (Ethernet, fiber optic) or wireless technologies (Wi-Fi,
Bluetooth).
4. Network Devices: Routers, switches, modems, and hubs.
5. Protocols: Rules for communication, such as TCP/IP, HTTP, and FTP.

Local Area Network (LAN):

A Local Area Network (LAN) is a network that connects computers and devices within a
limited geographical area, such as a home, office, school, or building. It allows devices to share
resources, like files, printers, and internet connections, efficiently.

Key Features of a LAN:

1. Limited Area: Covers a small physical location, usually within a few kilometers.
2. High-Speed Communication: Provides fast data transfer rates (e.g., Gigabit Ethernet).
3. Private Ownership: Typically owned and managed by a single organization or
individual.
4. Resource Sharing: Devices can share printers, storage, and software.

Advantages of LAN:

1. High Speed: Data transfer is quick due to the short distances.

2. Cost-Effective: Minimal hardware is required for setup and maintenance.
3. Centralized Management: Resources and devices can be managed from a central
location.

Examples of LAN Usage:

 A small office network connecting employee computers and a printer.

 A home network connecting multiple devices like laptops, smart TVs, and smartphones
via Wi-Fi.
