Confessions of a Health Seeker

Ms. Yogita Wagh

A special thanks to the doctors of NIN for their expertise and compassionate approach. Thanks once

Acupressure is an ancient traditional healing science in which pain and discomfort are understood to be
signs of energy imbalance, which becomesan illness. Acupressure approaches this energy imbalancewith
acupressure points which are located on Meridian, or subtle energy channels that run throughoutthe
body and connect all parts of the body. This can be compared to the vital energy concept innaturopathy.
When vital energy circulates freely within the body without any obstruction, it fills upevery cell with
fresh oxygen and an ample amount of blood supply which improves overall functioning ofthe body and
relieves pain/discomfort. In a way, acupressure helps to remove the obstruction in the flow ofvital energy
and enhances vitality.
Acupressure involves the application of manual pressure usually with fingertips or with the help of
someinstruments to specific points on the body to relieve pain/discomfort, to improve qualityof sleep, to
improve metabolism, to enhance immunity, and to maintain health and wellness.
Acupressure helps in restoring harmony naturally. The obstructed energy can be corrected byincreasing
the flow of energy to various organs through acupressure. On the body surface, there areacupressure points
called push buttons or trigger points. On stimulating these points energy balance isrestored. Acupressure
improves the circulation and hence the functions of all organs. Acupressure helpsin releasing nervous
tension and revitalizes the hidden strength in the body.
Acupressure can be given along the spine using a pointed gadget. Areas like fingers, toes, upper portionof
hands and feet, and back side of the knee should be pressed by thumb and fingers. The pressure shouldbe
gentle but reasonably firm.

GANDHIJI TREATING A FRACTURED ARM

Gandhiji’s son, Ramdas Gandhi

Today, we will see how Gandhiji applied mud to treat his son’s fractured arm. Kasturba was coming
to India on a ship with her sons and at the time of alighting from the ship, Ramdas injured his hand
while playing with the ship’s captain. When Gandhiji saw Ramdas, his hand was in a sling. It was
very painful, and Gandhiji wanted to try his Nature Cure methods immediately.
However, the people around said that he should take Ramdas to a trained medical doctor and that the
fractured hand should be cast. But Gandhiji wanted to apply mud so he asked Ramdas if he would
mind if he applied mud to his wound and Ramdas said “Not at all, no problem.”
But how would an 8-year-old boy know what is good for him? This troubled Gandhiji but he understood
that Ramdas was sensible enough to understand the difference between quackery and proper medical
treatment.
Having convinced himself and his son, Gandhiji started applying mud every day. He opened the
bandage and applied fresh mud every day. This treatment went on every day for one full month and
Ramdas recovered completely from the fracture.
The ship’s doctor had also said that it would take one month for the injury to heal. So Gandhiji’s
commitment and conviction in nature cure got reinforced. That is how Gandhiji experimented on
himself, his family members, and his fellow ashramites.

The narration was done by Prof. (Dr.) K. Satya Lakshmi, Director, National Institute of
Naturopathy, Pune, based on authentic literature available on Mahatma Gandhi.
