Marking Guide – Senior Two

Mathematics Assessment (Week 6)

School: Caltec Academy Makerere

Class: Senior Two

Subject: Mathematics

Duration: 2 Hours

Question 1: Numerical Concept 1 – Indices and Standard Form (25 Marks)

a) 2.4 × 10^8 × 6 × 10^4 = 14.4 × 10^12 = 1.44 × 10^13 (2 marks)
b) 3^4 × 3^2 ÷ 3^3 = 3^(4+2−3) = 3^3 = 27 (3 marks)
c) 0.000024 = 2.4 × 10^-5 (2 marks)
d) 2.4 × 10^8 packets ÷ 86400 seconds = approx. 2.78 × 10^3 (3 marks)
e) 5^3 = 125; 3^4 = 81 → 5^3 is greater (2 marks explanation, 2 marks calculation)

Question 2: Inequalities and Regions (25 Marks)

a) x + y ≤ 100; x ≥ 30; y ≤ 60 (3 marks)
b) Correct graph with all lines and shaded feasible region (5 marks)
c) (40, 50): 40 + 50 = 90 ≤ 100; 40 ≥ 30; 50 ≤ 60 → Valid (3 marks)
d) Profit = 2000x + 3000y (2 marks)
e) Maximum occurs at corner points of feasible region → evaluate all for highest profit (max
12 marks)

Question 3: Algebra 2 – Expansion, Perfect Squares & Quadratics (25

Marks)
a) (x + 3)^2 = x^2 + 6x + 9 (3 marks)
b) C(x) = 2(x^2 + 6x + 9) + 5(x - 1) = 2x^2 + 12x + 18 + 5x - 5 = 2x^2 + 17x + 13 (5 marks)
c) x^2 + 6x + 9 → (x + 3)^2 → Yes, perfect square (2 marks)
d) x^2 + 5x + 6 = (x + 2)(x + 3) (3 marks)
e) x^2 - 6x + 8 = 0 → (x - 2)(x - 4) = 0 → x = 2, 4 (4 marks)
Working and interpretation of motion (4 marks)
Question 4: Integrated Problem Solving – Algebra, Inequalities, Indices (25
Marks)
a) V = πx^2(x + 2) = 3.14x^3 + 6.28x^2 (4 marks)
b) Inequality: 2x^2 + 3x - 5 ≤ 500,000 (2 marks); Graphing/representation (3 marks)
c) Solve V ≥ 1 → test for x = 3, 4, 5, etc. (5 marks)
d) x = 5 → V = 3.14(25)(7) = 549.5 L = 0.5495 m^3 → Not acceptable (3 marks)
Cost = 2(25) + 3(5) - 5 = 50 + 15 - 5 = 60 (in UGX × some unit?) → Acceptable (2 marks)
e) Recommend x ≥ 6 to satisfy both constraints (6 marks, based on calculations and
justification)
