Tutorial – 1: Signals operations and classifications


1. Verify whether the following signals are periodic or not. Find the fundamental period if periodic,
(i) x(t) = cos(2πt+π/4), (ii) x(t) = cos2(2πt+π/4),
(iii) x(t) = cos(3πt+π/4)+ cos2(4πt+π/4), (iv) x(t) = cos(2t2)
(v) x[n] = cos(2πn/5), (vi) x[n] = cos(2πn/5) + cos2(3πn/7),

2. Write the relationship between unit impulse, unit step and unit ramp signals in both CT and DT
domains.

3. Find the dimension and number of channels of the following signals


(i) x(t) = cos(2t), (ii) x(t) = cos(2t) + sin(2t), (iii) i[m,n] = cos(πn/4)+sin(πm/6),
(iv) x(t) = [L(t), R(t)], (v) i(x,y,t) = bw(x, y, t),
(vi) I(x,y,t) = [ R(x, y, t), G(x, y, t), B(x, y, t) ]

4. Classify the following signal as energy / power signals


(i) x(t) = rect( (t-5)/3 ), (ii) x(t) = ej5t (u(t-5)-u(t-10), (iii) x[n] = 2n [u[n+5]-u[n-4],
(iv) x[n] = cos(nπ/5), (v) x[n] = sin(nπ/6), (vi) x[n] = sin(nπ/6) cos(nπ/5)

5. Plot the following signals:


(i) x(t) = r(t+5) – r(t-5) -2 u(t-5) + u(t-10), (ii) x[n] = u[n+5] -2u[n-3] +r[n-4] –r[n-8]

6. Let x(t) = rect( (t-5)/10 ) and y(t) is integral of x(t). Draw the signal x(t) and y(t).

7. Let x[n] = r[n+3] – r[n] – u[n-5] and 𝑦[𝑛] = ∑𝑛𝑘=−∞ 𝑥[𝑘]. Draw the signals x[n] and y[n].

8. Let a signal x(t) is periodic saw tooth wave with fundamental period of 2ms and swings between 0
and 2V. Draw the signal x(t) and its differentiation y(t) = dx(t) /dt

9. Let a signal x(t) is periodic triangular wave with fundamental period of 2ms, 50% duty cycle and
swings between 0 and 1V. Draw the signal x(t) and its differential versions (i)

10. Consider the signal : x(t) = r(t+5) – r(t) -u(t-5). ,

12. Consider the signal : x[n] = u[n+5] -2u[n-3] +r[n-4].


Draw the signals, (i) y[n] = x[n] – x[n-1], (ii) y[n] = ∑𝑛𝑘=0 𝑥[𝑘]
