Data Communication - Components
Introduction
Data communication refers to the exchange of data between two devices via some form of transmission
medium. This communication can be local (face-to-face) or remote (over distance, using networks).
1. Message
The information to be communicated. It can be text, numbers, images, audio, or video.
2. Sender
The device that sends the data. Example: computer, phone, video camera.
3. Receiver
The device that receives the data. Example: computer, TV, mobile phone.
4. Transmission Medium
The physical path through which data is transmitted. Examples: fiber optics, coaxial cable, radio waves.
5. Protocol
A set of rules that govern communication. Without common protocols, devices can't understand each other.
Note
Without all these components working together, effective communication cannot happen. Protocols are
especially important, as they ensure the sender and receiver 'speak the same language'.
