UNITY
A MEDITATION PIECE BY PLATOON 9
Have you ever been part of a group of people going to a destination you did not know? All you knew
was the name of the location but you did not know how to get there and in the process, you wandered
from the group? How did you find your way back?
Such is life! They often say “united, we stand and divided, we fall”. This is more than just an adage, it is
a reality we must all learn to incorporate in our daily lives. Imagine a war amongst the parts of your
body because each part felt more important. As a result of this, every part decided to take a break and
leave the work for the “most important parts”. What do you think would happen to your body when
the heart decides not to pump blood because the eye feels too important? Or when the legs decide to
take a break and let the mouth do all that he has been bragging about?
Life is like a jigsaw puzzle and every infinitesimal piece adds up to build the bigger picture. If one piece
is missing, the puzzle is incomplete and the picture needs saving. In the end, none of us is more
important than the other because we all have unique roles to play, which complement the roles of
others. It's like a movie, no matter how important the star may feel, his role somehow depends on
supporting characters to make sense. I wonder if you are getting my point.
Let us now use your personal life as an example. There are many things you can not do but you know
people who can do them. True or false? This makes us all equal in the end; irrespective of race, gender,
social status, and all the stereotypes society has created to divide us. It is high time we stepped out of
those boxes.
If we must make progress in life, we must learn to feed off the energy of others, complement each
others’ strengths and weaknesses because this is what will make us better individuals and a better
nation. Be a shield for those who need protection, provide for those who are to be provided for, lift
those who are down, comfort those who mourn, help others achieve their dreams from your own little
corner.
We are all in a boat headed to a destination called “There” and if one member of this crew decides to
stop rowing, this boat may sink and we all die. Do you want to be part of another titanic? Let us unite
as one insurmountable force and face life squarely because together, there is nothing we can't achieve if
we put our minds to it. This is not too much to ask. Turn to your neighbour and say “I am because
you are; you are because I am and together, we can”
