General
Before disconnecting the battery cable, check the audio system security code
Removal
Disconnect the battery earth cable
When the battery has been disconnected, the steering angle sensor must be calibrated
Remove the engine upper cover
Disconnect the mass airflow meter wiring
Remove the air filter air inlet
Remove the air filter housing
Raise the vehicle
Remove the engine lower cover
Drain the coolant
Vehicles with diesel particulate filter
Disconnect the exhaust gas temperature sensor
Disconnect the exhaust gas pressure sensor
All vehicles:
Disconnect the exhaust
Disconnect the front exhaust pipe from the catalytic converter
Loosen the crankshaft pulley
Turn the tensioner clockwise to release the belt tension
Remove the ancillary drive belt

Disconnect the battery earth cable

Remove the engine upper cover
Disconnect the mass airflow meter wiring
Remove the air filter air inlet
Remove the air filter housing
Raise the vehicle
Remove the engine lower cover
Drain the coolant
Note: At removal, mark the direction of rotation; when refitting ensure the drive belt rotates in

Drain the coolant
Installation

Fit the timing chain together with the crankshaft gearwheel
Disconnect the exhaust gas temperature sensor
Note: Clean off the area first
Disconnect the exhaust gas pressure sensor
Refit the chain guide rail
All vehicles:
Refit the chain tensioner rail(s) (9 Nm)
Disconnect the exhaust
Disconnect the front exhaust pipe from the catalytic converter
Loosen the crankshaft pulley
Turn the tensioner clockwise to release the belt tension
Remove the ancillary drive belt
Remove the tensioner locking pin (KM-955)
Refit the fuel rail bracket (25 Nm)
Refit the fuel rail (25 Nm)

Turn the tensioner clockwise to release the belt tension
Remove the ancillary drive belt
Remove the crankshaft gearwheel centre bolt
Remove the crankshaft pulley support flange
Fit the special tool and apply pressure (EN-46775)
Use the crankshaft pulley bolt

Remove the ancillary drive belt
Turn the engine by hand
The timing is set when the special tool(s) fit correctly (EN-46785)
Note: Repeat the procedure if the special tools do not fit properly
Remove the camshaft locking tools (EN-46781)
Remove the crankshaft locking tool (EN-46785)
Refit the access plugs

Refit the engine support bracket (60 Nm)
Vehicles with diesel particulate filter
Disconnect the exhaust gas temperature sensor
Disconnect the exhaust gas pressure sensor
All vehicles:
Disconnect the exhaust
Disconnect the front exhaust pipe from the catalytic converter
Loosen the crankshaft pulley
Turn the tensioner clockwise to release the belt tension
Remove the ancillary drive belt
Refit the engine support
Tighten the bolts (A: 60 Nm + 30° - 45°)
use new bolt(s)
Tighten the bolts (B: 40 Nm)

Disconnect the exhaust gas pressure sensor
All vehicles:
Disconnect the exhaust
Disconnect the front exhaust pipe from the catalytic converter
Loosen the crankshaft pulley
Turn the tensioner clockwise to release the belt tension
Remove the ancillary drive belt
Reconnect the catalytic converter to the gearbox bracket
Refit the catalytic converter (30 Nm)
Renew the locking plate
Renew the gasket

Timing chain: removal/installation
General
Before disconnecting the battery cable, check the audio system security code
Removal
Disconnect the battery earth cable
When the battery has been disconnected, the steering angle sensor must be calibrated
Remove the engine upper cover
Disconnect the mass airflow meter wiring
Remove the air filter air inlet
Remove the air filter housing
Raise the vehicle
Remove the engine lower cover
Drain the coolant
Catalytic converter/turbocharger: (30 Nm)
Vehicles with diesel particulate filter
Front exhaust pipe: (25 Nm)
Disconnect the exhaust gas temperature sensor
Exhaust clamp: (35 Nm)
Disconnect the exhaust gas pressure sensor
Crankshaft pulley: (25 Nm)
All vehicles:
Ancillary drive belt tensioner: (50 Nm)
Disconnect the exhaust
Special tools
Disconnect the front exhaust pipe from the catalytic converter
Subframe support: (KM-6394)
Loosen the crankshaft pulley
Camshaft locking tool: (EN-46781)
Turn the tensioner clockwise to release the belt tension
Crankshaft locking tool: (EN-46785)
Remove the ancillary drive belt
