Sampling

Sampling is the process of selecting a representative subset from a larger population, which is cost-effective, time-saving, and can improve accuracy. It ensures that the sample reflects the population's characteristics and can protect individual privacy in sensitive studies. A sampling frame is a method used to identify the population members included in the sample, and it must be accurate and up-to-date to ensure representativeness.

.10 Why sample the population?

What is a sampling frame

Sampling is the process of selecting a representative subset, or sample, from a larger

population in order to represent o the entire population. Sampling is often used in research
studies or surveys when it is not feasible or practical to collect data from every member of the
population.
Sampling is important for several reasons:
Cost-Effective: Sampling is a cost-effective way to gather data, as it is often much cheaper and
faster to collect data from a smaller subset of the population than from the entire population.
Time-saving: Sampling allows researchers to collect data more quickly than if they were to
survey the entire population. This is especially important when time is of the essence, such as in
emergency situations.
Improved accuracy: Sampling can often provide more accurate results than a census of the
entire population. This is because the process of collecting data from every member of the
population can be difficult or impossible, and some members of the population may be difficult
to reach.
Representative: Sampling helps to ensure that the sample is representative of the population,
meaning that the characteristics of the sample are similar to those of the population as a
whole. This is important because it allows researchers to make accurate inferences about the
population based on the sample.
Ethical: In some cases, it may not be ethical or practical to collect data from every member of
the population. For example, if a study involves sensitive or personal information, it may not be
appropriate to ask every member of the population to provide that information. Sampling can
help to protect the privacy of individuals while still allowing researchers to gather important
data.
A sampling frame Is a list or other method used to identify the members of a population that
will be included in the sample. It is important to use a sampling frame that accurately
represents the population of interest in order to ensure that the sample is truly representative.
The sampling frame should include all members of the population and should be up-to-date
and accurate.
For example, if a researcher wants to conduct a survey of college students, the sampling frame
might include a list of all students enrolled in the college or university. This list could be
obtained from the college registrar’s office or another administrative department.
