D Tutorial2Mecmat

The document outlines a sample problem involving normal and shear stress on a bracket, requiring the determination of a free-body diagram, forces at specific points, and the calculation of diameters for a control rod and pin based on safety factors. It provides step-by-step solutions for each part, including the calculation of allowable stresses and required cross-sectional areas. The final results indicate a diameter of 16.74 mm for the rod and 21.4 mm for the pin.

Normal and shear stress

Sample problem :

Two forces are applied to the bracket 𝐵𝐶𝐷 as shown.

(a) Determine the free-body diagram of the structure

(b) Find the force P and reaction force at C
(c) Knowing that the control rod 𝐴𝐵 is to be made of a steel having an ultimate normal
stress of 600 𝑀𝑃𝑎, determine the diameter of the rod for which the factor of safety
with respect to failure will be 3.3.
(d) The pin at 𝐶 is to be made of a steel having an ultimate shearing stress of 350 𝑀𝑃𝑎.
Determine the diameter of the pin 𝐶 for which the factor of safety with respect to shear
will also be 3.3.

Guidelines:

-Allowable stress= ultimate stress/factor of safety

-For question (b) you need to determine the force 𝑪 at the pin 𝐶. For this aim, use the
conventionnal pin reaction forces at 𝐶

Solution:

a- Free body diagram

The free body diagram leads to:

b- Force P and reaction force C:

The reaction at C is represented by its components 𝐶𝑥 and 𝐶𝑦

𝜮Mc=0 P(0,6m)-(50kN)(0,3m)-(15kN)(0,6m)=0 P=40kN

𝜮Fx=0 Cx =40kN
𝜮Fy=0 Cy =65kN

𝐶 = √𝐶𝑥2 + 𝐶𝑦2 = 76,3𝑘𝑁

c- Diameter of the rod AB

The allowable stress is

𝜎𝑈 600𝑀𝑃𝑎
𝜎𝑎𝑙𝑙 = 𝐹.𝑆 = 3.3 = 181,18𝑀𝑃𝑎
For 𝑃 = 40𝑘𝑁 the cross-sectional area required is:

𝑃 40𝑘𝑁
𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑞 = = = 220. 10−6 𝑚2
𝜎𝑎𝑙𝑙 181.8 𝑀𝑃𝑎

𝜋
𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑞 = 𝑑𝐴𝐵 2
4

𝑑𝐴𝐵 = 16,74𝑚𝑚
d- Diameter of the pin C: For a factor of safety of 3.3, we have

𝜏𝑈 350𝑀𝑃𝑎
𝜏𝑎𝑙𝑙 = = = 106,1 𝑀𝑃𝑎
𝐹. 𝑆 3.3

Since the pin is in double shear, we write:

𝐶/2 76.3𝑘𝑁/2
𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑞 = = = 360 𝑚𝑚2
𝜏𝑎𝑙𝑙 106.1 𝑀𝑃𝑎
𝜋 2
𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑞 = 𝑑
4 𝐶
𝑑𝐶 = 21,4𝑚𝑚
