Logging user data with RFID (Set 13)

Article ID: 96784939, V3.0, 04/2021 3
1 Introduction

1 Introduction

Notes This set is an expansion of Set 6 "Quality Assurance by means of Weighing,

Controlling, and Logging".
An RFID reader must be connected to Set 6. The filled goods from set 6 are
provided with a transponder on which the product information is written and can
also be read.
For more information on Set 6 "Quality Assurance by means of Weighing,
Controlling, and Logging", see entry ID 82454336.

1.1 Overview
In the packaging industry, containers equipped with RFID transponders are filled
with a specified number of pieces (e.g., wall anchors) via weight control.
The product to be filled is selected by means of recipes.
After completion of the filling, a quality assessment takes place.
If the filling weight is within the tolerances that must be adhered to (specified in the
recipe), the packaged goods pass the quality control, otherwise they do not.
© Siemens AG 2021 All rights reserved

Over the course of this quality assurance measure, the goods must be clearly
identified and all relevant data, including timestamps, must be logged.
The log data should also be written to the transponders on the containers via a
connected RFID reader for later tracking.
The unique serial number UID (Unique Identifier) of the transponder is read out and
written in the data logging process (DataLog).
However, the filling process must be ensured even if the transponder is not
recognized; the produced goods must still be transported away and the RFID
access error must be reported.
The RFID functionality should be able to be controlled manually for checking
purposes, even without a filling process.

Set 6 uses an S7-1200 Controller and the SIWAREX WP251 weighing module
with a WL260 load cell. The weight value of the goods to be filled is recorded and
compared with a reference value calculated from the recipe data. After filling, it is
checked whether all components are complete. The goods packages can be
clearly identified by a batch number.
The DataLog function of the S7-1200 Controller enables the currently measured
weight values to be logged with a timestamp in the flash memory of the CPU.
The TP 700 Comfort TouchPanel can be used to operate and monitor the
application example.
Communication between the controller, HMI, and programming device takes place
via the CSM 1277 Ethernet switch.
With this expansion set, the UID of the MDS D261 transponder on the packaging
is read with the RF120C communication module and the RF240R RFID reader and
integrated into the process data log.
In addition, the recipe data with the timestamp of the filling, weight, and quality
assessment are written to the transponder on the filled goods in addition to being
logged in the load memory of the control system.
The user data can be edited, written to the transponder, and read out again in
manual operation, even without the weighing technology expansion.

Logging user data with RFID (Set 13)

Article ID: 96784939, V3.0, 04/2021 9
2 Fundamentals

2 Fundamentals
This application example is based on set 6 (\3\).
In addition to the RF120C communication module for the SIMATIC S7-1200, the
combination of RFID reader and compatible transponders plays a decisive role.
The combinations differ by:
• Used technology/protocol of the air interface
• Simultaneous detection of several transponders (Multitag) required/Range of
transponder detection (read/write)
• Size of the user memory on the transponder/data transmission speed
• Size of reader and transponder
• …
The SIMATIC RF240R reader in conjunction with the MDS D261 adhesive
SmartLabel transponder was selected as a cost-effective variant.
The compatibility of the combination of RFID reader and transponder can be found
in the SIMATIC RF Configuration Guide (\6\).

2.1 SIMATIC RF120C communication module

The SIMATIC RF120C is a communication module for direct connection of the
SIMATIC Ident systems to the S7-1200.
© Siemens AG 2021 All rights reserved

The readers of all RFID systems as well as the MV400 code reader systems can
be operated on the SIMATIC RF120C.

Figure 2-1
TP 700 Comfort

RF120C S7-1200 CPU

RF240R
MDS D261

Only one reader or one code reader with RS422 interface can be operated at one
RF120C communication module.
This means that a maximum of 3 readers can be operated per S7-1200 CPU
(3 RF120C communication modules with one reader each).
RFID readers and code readers from the following product families can be
operated with the RF120C:
• RF200
• RF300
• RF600
• MV400 code readers
• MOBY D
• MOBY U

2 Fundamentals

For more information about the RF120C communication module, refer to the
SIMATIC Ident RFID Systems communication module RF120C instruction manual
(\9\).
A library with newly developed commands (function blocks) enables simple
programming and commissioning in the TIA Portal (\7\).

2.2 RF240R RFID Reader

The SIMATIC RF240R reader is a reader with an integrated antenna.
Its extra compact design makes it ideal for use in small assembly lines.
It is powered from the RF120C communication module.
This reader has either an RS422 or an RS232 interface.
For the connection to the RF120C communication module, the variant with the
RS422 interface is selected.
Thanks to its high degree of protection (IP67) and robust design, the SIMATIC
RF240R reader can be used without problems even under the toughest industrial
conditions. It is connected via an 8-pin M12 plug-in connector.
The RF240R has a 2-color LED that signals the operating voltage, the operator's
presence, and errors. The errors can be acknowledged with the corresponding
configuration setting of the RF120C via the function block "Reset_Reader" (see
Section 4.2).
The reader is operated with ISO 15693-compatible transponders and supports
singletag operation (only one transponder may be in the reader's detection range).
© Siemens AG 2021 All rights reserved

For more information on the RF240R RFID reader, please visit \8\.

2.3 ISO Transponder MDS D261

The MDS D261 is a SmartLabel transponder (self-adhesive label).
It can be used for the RFID system MOBY D, as well as for SIMATIC RF200 and
SIMATIC RF300 (ISO mode).
SmartLabels permit numerous flexible constructions to ensure optimum
dimensioning for many different applications.
Due to their reasonable price, the SmartLabels are universally applicable as
"electronic barcode replacement/supplement" or as "goods accompanying
documents".
In conjunction with the RFID reader RF240R, the transponder MDS D261 is
detected at a distance of 2–60 mm (\6\).
It has 256 bytes of EEPROM user memory.
In addition to this freely available memory area for user data, each ISO
transponder chip has an 8-byte unique serial number (UID, read only).

Table 2-1

3.4 Auxiliary Blocks

The following auxiliary blocks are used in this application example:
• "Serialize" to copy the user data to be written into an array of bytes
• "Deserialize" to copy the received data (array of bytes) into the user data to be
interpreted
• "CopyRFID" for collecting all relevant user data to be written to the transponder

3.4.1 Functions "Serialize"/"Deserialize"

The data buffers "IDENT_DATA" of the communication blocks "READ" and

"WRITE" are designed as data types "Variant" and require an array of bytes as the
data transferred. To put the user data into this form, the command "Serialize" is
needed before writing the RFID data. To convert the received transponder data as
an array of bytes into understandable user data, the application example uses the
command "Deserialize".
The "Deserialize" and "Serialize" functions can be found in TIA Portal in the
"Instructions" task card under "Basic instructions" > "Move operations":

Notes In contrast with previous versions, the commands used as of version V2.0 also
allow access to optimized memory areas.

3.4.2 Call FC "Deserialize"

The command "Deserialize" converts the sequential representation of data (array

of bytes) into a PLC data type.

Structure target variable

Figure 3-9

Logging user data with RFID (Set 13)

Article ID: 96784939, V3.0, 04/2021 19
3 Engineering

The command "Deserialize" is called in the application example in connection with

the RFID commands "Read".
In the case shown in Figure 3-8, for example, the read user data
"Reader_1.readData" is copied from the transponder to the data structure
"readDataRFID" of the PLC data type "typeDataRFID" (Figure 3-9) (OB
"MainRFID" network 8).
The operand at parameter "POS" must be initiated before the command is called
(e.g., "POS" = 0). This determines where the data in "DEST_VARIABLE" is to be
written. After "Deserialize" has been processed, "POS" indicates the first position
after the written data in "DEST_VARIABLE".

Notes A more detailed description of the command "Deserialize" can be found in the
system manual for STEP 7 Basic V16 (\19\) or in the TIA Portal help section via
F1.

3.4.3 Call FC "Serialize"

With the command "Serialize", you convert structured data (e.g., PLC data types)
into a sequential representation form (e.g., ARRAY of bytes) without losing parts of
their structure.

3.4.4 Function "CopyRFID"

The FC "CopyRFID" collects all required user data to be written to the transponder
in automatic operation and stores it in a data buffer. These consist of the data
recorded during process value logging via DataLogging and the timestamp of the
recording.
The FC "CopyRFID" is called in the OB "MainRFID".

3.6 Changes in set 6

To ensure the filling process in the event of an error in transponder access, the
program code of set 6 must also be adapted.
The transponder must remain in the detection range of the reader long enough to
read and write the data, but must not prevent the filled goods from being
discharged.

FB "TimerRFID"
The FB "TimerRFID" intervenes in the block link between the filling process (FB
"Filling") and the discharge (FB "Hmi") or the collection of the DataLog data (FC
"Copy") and is called in OB 1 "Main".
After successful filling (fillingDone), a preset time (here, 1 second) elapses in
automatic operation (manAutoRFID), in which the RFID step chain must have been
successfully processed (doneRFID).
In the positive case, the read UID (uidRFID) is copied (counter) into the
DataLogging data record to be written and "doneRFID" starts the discharge of the
packet (startM2HMI), as well as the recording of the process data.
In the negative case, a predefined error number "packetNoError" (here the count
value of the filling) is copied into the DataLogging data record to be written and the
discharge of the packet and the recording of the process data start after the
elapsed time. Incorrect access to the transponder is signaled via the output "error".
© Siemens AG 2021 All rights reserved

The output "error" is reset via the input "acknowledge".

In manual operation (manAutoRFID = false), the RFID step chain is not time-
monitored. The RFID transponder is written manually.
There is no discharge and no process data logging with DataLogging (startM2HMI).

5.2 Installation of the software (download)

This section describes the steps for installing the sample code.

Notes At this point it is assumed that the necessary software is installed on your
computer and that you are familiar with the basic use of this software.

Preface note
For startup, we offer you software examples with test code and test parameters as
a download. The software examples support you during the first steps and tests
with Set 13. They allow a quick test of the hardware and software interfaces
between the products described in the set.
The software examples are always assigned to the components used in the set
and show their basic interaction. However, they do not themselves represent real
applications in the sense of a technological problem solution with definable
properties.
You can also operate the supplied project as an independent RFID application
example without a real SIWAREX connection. The S7-1200 CPU will signal the
missing module via the "ERROR" LED. However, the RFID functions can still be
executed via manual operation (see Section 6.3.1).
