ETABS Tutorial Note

Introduction to ETABS
ETABS (Extended Three-Dimensional Analysis of Building Systems) is an integrated
software package developed by CSI (Computers and Structures, Inc.) for the structural
analysis and design of buildings. It is widely used in the civil engineering field for designing
multi-story buildings and analyzing both static and dynamic loads.

Objectives of the Tutorial

By the end of this tutorial, you will:
- Understand the basic features and interface of ETABS.
- Learn how to create and define a structural model.
- Assign loads and boundary conditions.
- Perform structural analysis and design.
- Review and interpret analysis results.

Main Features of ETABS

 - Graphical modeling and user-friendly interface.
 - 3D modeling of structural systems.
 - Load definition (dead, live, wind, earthquake).
 - Automatic code-based load combinations.
 - Analysis options (linear, non-linear, dynamic).
 - Concrete and steel design according to codes.
 - Detailed output reports and drawings.

Basic Workflow in ETABS

1. Start a New Model:

Launch ETABS and choose 'New Model'. Select grid and story data.

2. Define Materials and Sections:

Go to Define > Materials and Define > Section Properties to input beams, columns, slabs, and
walls.

3. Draw Structural Elements:

Use the drawing tools to model columns, beams, floors, and shear walls.

4. Assign Loads:
Define load patterns and assign dead, live, and lateral loads.

5. Apply Supports and Restraints:

Add supports at base level and restraints for realistic boundary conditions.

6. Mesh the Model:

Divide slabs into finite elements for accurate analysis.

7. Run the Analysis:

Go to Analyze > Run Analysis to check structural behavior.

8. Design:

Use Design > Concrete Frame Design or Steel Frame Design as per requirements.

9. View Results:

Check deflections, reactions, bending moments, and shear forces.

Common Load Types in ETABS

 - Dead Load – Self-weight of structural elements.
 - Live Load – Occupancy and furniture loads.
 - Wind Load – Based on wind speed and exposure.
 - Seismic Load – Based on zone and soil condition.
 - Snow Load – For cold regions (if applicable).

Tips and Best Practices

 - Start modeling from ground floor upward.
 - Use symmetry to reduce modeling time.
 - Assign proper diaphragm constraints.
 - Check units before inputting values.
 - Verify model with simple hand calculations.
 - Use design check summaries to validate structural elements.

Conclusion
ETABS is a powerful and efficient tool for structural engineers. It simplifies the design of
complex buildings by integrating modeling, analysis, and design in one platform.
Practice Task for Students
Create a 5-story building model in ETABS with the following steps:
- Define story height, grid lines, and materials.
- Model columns, beams, and slabs.
- Assign dead and live loads.
- Run analysis and design the structure.
- View and interpret bending moment diagrams.
