This module is designed to enable the learner to provide leadership and management in
health care.

Module Content

Leadership and Management:


Introduction to leadership and management; concepts in leadership and management,
definitions, styles, functions, Visions and Missions.

Communication and Networking:


Communication, networking, public speaking, report writing, negotiation skills, inter-
sectoral collaboration, planning and conducting meetings.

Management of Resources:
Human resource management; orientation, deployment, performance appraisal, job
description, counseling and motivation, work climate, conflict resolution and discipline
issues; grievances, Code of Regulations, managing change, Continuous Professional
Development (CPD), entrepreneurship/educational, scholarships, employment, private
practice and other opportunities, preparation for employment to include letter writing,
resumes (curriculum vitae), preparation for interviews.

Financial Management:
Sources of finance (government, donors, revolving funds, CDF etc.), healthcare proposal
writing, budgeting, financial procedures and mechanism, accounting documents, vouchers,
per diem, facility improvement fund (FIF), salaries and wages, allowances, vote books,
management; principles of supplies cycle, procurement and management of supplies and
procurement.

Time Management:
Time wasters, culprits and eliminating them. Strategies of management, techniques of
organization, prioritizing to-do lists, scheduling tips and guidelines to handle drop-in
visitors, how to say no to tasks which are not within your plan, 5 tips to procrastination,
managing crisis, 10 ways to clear your desk, controlling (techniques to control...).

Health Information System:


Definition of health information, sources, types, systems of health information, data
collection methods, storage and analysis, information utilization, decision making.

Quality Assurance:
Methods and tools of measuring quality, management of quality, tools of measuring quality,
nursing and health services (procedures, policies, standards).

Monitoring and Evaluation:


Definition of Monitoring and Evaluation, monitoring and evaluation tools, performance
indicators and targets, work plans. Reports (types, formats, characteristics of a good
report).
Disaster Management:
Introduction, definition of terms, types of disasters and emergencies, phases, disaster
management (cycle, preparedness, response, mitigation, management of accidents).
