Part 2: SCENARIO-BASED ACTIVITY! Identify the different stages of the

Data Processing (Input, Process, Output) in the given Scenarios.

Scenario #1: A shipping company manages a fleet of container ships

traveling between Asia and Europe.
Every day:
• Each ship’s crew enters data into onboard computers:
o Fuel consumption
o Engine performance
o Position reports
o Weather observations
• The data is stored in a database on the ship’s onboard system.
• At the end of the day, the system automatically sends the data via
satellite to the shipping company’s headquarters.
At headquarters:
• Staff use database management software and spreadsheets to process
the data.
• They generate daily fleet reports, check for unusual fuel use, and
update a dashboard that shows where all ships are and how they are
performing.

Scenario #2: A modern container ship is equipped with an Integrated

Bridge System (IBS) and a Vessel Performance Monitoring System.
Every few seconds:
• Sensors automatically collect data on:
o Engine temperature
o Fuel consumption
o Ship speed and position
ICT- Software Application and Networking System used in Seagoing Ships
o Weather and sea conditions
Without human input:
• The system processes the data in real time:
o Detects unusual fuel consumption patterns
o Calculates the most efficient route based on updated weather
data
o Sends automatic alerts to the crew if something is abnormal
At the same time:
• The processed data is automatically transmitted via satellite to
the shipping company's headquarters.
• At HQ, the fleet management software updates dashboards that
managers can see instantly.
• Automated algorithms generate reports and send email alerts if the
system detects potential maintenance issues or route deviations.

Scenario #3: At the end of each day, the chief officer on a cargo
ship records the ship’s fuel consumption, engine hours, and weather
conditions in a paper logbook.
Later, when the ship arrives at port, the officer:
• Takes the handwritten logbook
• Manually fills out a report form summarizing daily fuel use and
distance traveled
• Calculates totals using a calculator (not a computer)
• Submits the report by fax or physical delivery to the shipping
company’s office
At the company’s office, a staff member:
• Reads the paper report
• Types the numbers into a spreadsheet on the computer to store and
analyze them

Scenario #4:On a mid-20th century cargo ship, the purser is

responsible for keeping track of cargo manifests and crew payroll.
At the end of each voyage:
• The purser uses a mechanical adding machine (like a comptometer or
crank calculator) to total the number of cargo units loaded and
discharged.
• For crew payroll, the purser manually lists wages and overtime
hours, then calculates each seafarer’s pay by turning the handle on
the mechanical calculator.
• The purser then types the final report and crew payslips on a
manual typewriter.
• Copies are made using carbon paper.
