Proving the Stereotype that Males Are Better at...
In this experiment, a few volunteers were tested to see the amount of pain they could handle, or how
long they could last while being uncomfortable. The volunteers were asked to put their hand in a bucket
of ice water that was about 55 degrees, and were timed. Their times were recorded, and it was found that
males lasted an average of twelve seconds longer than females did. The hypothesis that was made ended
up being correct, that men will last longer than women.

There has always been a stereotype that men can handle pain better than women can. It could be that
women are just more vocal about the pain, and men keep it more to themselves (Landau, 2012).
Researchers looked through pain scores from patients at Stanford Hospital, and they ... Show more content

A Tupperware container was filled with ice and another container was filled with room temperature
water. A digital thermometer was inserted into the water filled container, and ice was slowly added
until the temperature dropped to fifty five degrees Fahrenheit. When volunteers put their hand in the
water, the amount of time that they could hold their hand in the container was measured, and then
recorded, along with their name. Before each new volunteer arrived, the temperature was checked and
reset back to fifty five degrees by adding or removing ice cubes. The averages of the males and females
were taken and compared. It was found that men lasted longer with their hand in the ice water than
women did. Males lasted an average of twelve seconds longer than the females did. Males lasted an
average of fifty eight seconds, and females lasted an average of forty six seconds. Only one female lasted
over a minute; the rest couldn t keep their hand in for that long. Four males lasted over a minute. The
times of the females were all around forty seconds, and for the males the times were all around fifty
seconds. The results were similar to our hypothesis, except for the fact that the average times weren t
predicted, so they were unknown until the averages were calculated. As the female volunteers were timed,
they seemed to be more vocal about the pain and how uncomfortable they felt than the males were, who
stayed pretty much quiet throughout the experiment, except
Desktop Research Paper
Violet Batchelor I believe that one of the most interesting and widely used and seen human computer
interface devices is the desktop. Being only 20 years old, I have never personally owned a computer
that did not have some kind of desktop. I had never thought to delve into why it was called the desktop
until we discussed this in class. A computers desktop is the place where the user can organize shortcuts to
their different activites. Some examples are a link to an internetpage, a shortcut to MicrosoftOffice, or a
shortcut to My Computer in the file explorer. The desktop was invented along with the GUI (graphical
user interface) and so I personally put it under the category of the granddaddy of computer interfaces. If
you use a modern computer, you use a desktop. When you start up your machine, whatever operating
system it is, the first thing you will see (once the computer has finished booting) is your... Show more

You can learn a lot about someone by how their desktop looks and what s in it. A writer would
probably have hundreds of shortcuts to their unfinished screenplays, while a programmer may also
have 100s of shortcuts, but to different coding projects. The desktop also, as users before the desktop
know, makes using a computer much faster and easier. Instead of having to search (possibly through
command line) for something you may possibly do everyday, you can make a shortcut to it (and in
some cases, your computer will make one for you) and just click it. I can almost hear the AHA!
moment of we ll call it a desktop! I imagine, especially in the beginning, that the name desktop was the
best fit for this interface. A programmer looked around their desk, thinking what will we call this great
new interface? and they saw their files and papers surrounding them and came to the logical conclusion
that that interface full of their documents and files looked just like their desk in front of
A Review of Margaret Wente s Inside the Entitlement...
Assignment 2: A Critical Response Essay A Review of Margaret Wente s: Inside the entitlement
generation Margaret Wente s Globe and Mail article on the existence and characteristics of the entitlement
generation in Canada is both opinionated and thought provoking. The author strongly supports that the
entitlement mindset is quite prevalent in Canada s universities, has been nurtured by its preceding
generation and has led to students unrealistic work expectations. Although Wente effectively
communicates her opinions regarding the entitlement generation, her arguments are compromised by poor
use of appeal to authority and a polarized approach to the topic. Those who have stepped onto one of
Canada s many university campuses may... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The author uses Dr. Coates apparent expertise on the entitlement generation to support her arguments. She
reassures her reader that Dr. Coates is an expert on the entitlement generation by indicating that his book,
Campus Confidential is a guide to the mindset of the entitlement generation (par. 3). Wente presents Dr.
Coates opinions as if they were her own, demonstrating her concurrence. Her agreement can be seen in
her support of Dr. Coates statement that [students] bring assignments in late and think that [professors]
will mark them without penalty (par. 4). Wente claims that this attitude is predictable because that s the
way it s been all their lives (par. 5). Wente s editorial is riddled with this type of accord, which may be
criticized by the reader. The author only introduces the audience to Dr. Coates who is assumed to be the
expert on the topic and lacks an indication that there is adequate agreement among other experts.
Additionally, there is no mention of the opinions held by Dr. Coates students regarding his credibility
and competence in his role as a professor. It is possible that his opinion of the students he has encountered
during his career has been shaped by their attitude towards his teaching ability, popularity or subject of
expertise. Finally, Wente adopts a polarized approach to the topic by implying that students are either a
part of the entitlement generation or the top 15 to

Eating Meat: Biological Necessity, or Choice? The first article I chose to use for my research paper, is
from the scientific journal American Scientist, called Meat Eating Among the Earliest Humans, written by
Briana Pobiner who is a paleoanthropologist at the Smithsonian s National Museum of Natural History. In
this article, Pobiner discusses the biological evolution of humans, how human meat consumption evolved
over time to facilitate the growth of human brain size to become the intelligent and sentient beings we are
today, and whether or not we still need to eat meat as our ancestors did. Pobiner references many other
scientists observations and discoveries. For example, she uses the observations of a Mister Sherwood
Washburn from the University of California at Berkeley to expound upon how early findings of human
meat consumptions may have been wrong. According to Washburn, most current carnivores leave the
skull and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The author of this work also is very knowledgeable on this topic because it is his area of expertise
through much research and studying. While Yount is using questions from undergraduate students, they
are easily understood questions. This article adds value to my research paper because it brings the
humanity of eating meat into the equation. So as my research essay moves from the human biological
need, or lack thereof, to consume meat, this article will help me bridge the gap because of the wide
variety of opinions and facts that are presented within it. It will help my research paper immensely that
Yount took the time to ask questions often posed to vegetarians, omnivores, and so on, so as to not
seemed biased in one way or another. This creates a great balance which will really help my
The Problem Of Evil And Moral Evil
Theology Research Paper

Erin Washington
RLST 160: Introduction to Theology
May 5, 2015

Many questions arise when attempts are made to explain the problem of evil and why it exists in our
world when God is all knowing, all powerful, and all good. The subject of evil and why it exists is a
difficult topic to find an exact answer to, especially when evil is presented in the form of nature. Natural
evil and moral evil are two different types of evil that take form and cause suffering to humans. Natural
evil is events and maladies in nature that bring suffering upon mankind and nature. Natural evil can be
difficult to explain because it does not seem likely that a tornado or hurricane is the result of a human
acting in sinful ways. Moral evil has to do with the bad things people do to cause suffering. According
to Reese, moral evil is by the choice of human free will, an individual breaks a moral, ethical standard
and causes suffering upon self, others or nature. Many ways used to describe the problem of evil are in the
form of a theodicy. A theodicy is an attempt to offer different answers to the problem of evil. Two of the
theodicies discussed in this paper will be the Augustinian Theodicy and the Iranaean Theodicy. Both
theodicies direct their explanations toward moral evil than natural evil. First, the Augustinian theodicy
and the pros and cons associated with its attempt to explain the problem of evil will be discussed.

Theme Of Religion In Moby Dick
Religion s Answer to the Unanswered Herman Melville s Moby Dick is mostly told from the perspective
of Ishmael, however, the story is actually retold. As the ship journey furthers into the ranges of the oceans,
Ishmael recounts the honorable profession whaling and attempts to share all of his knowledge with the
readers. He does not intend to share the gaps of knowledge in his ship s pursuits, or whaling as a whole,
rather the opposite. Although attempts are made to share knowledge, two intertwined themes are present:
the limits of knowledge and the role of religion in answering questions beyond those limits. Ishmael sets
himself apart from the rest of the novel s characters by attempting to raise awareness about the whaling
industry s history and realities with facts and measurements. But the same evidence he uses to prove
underlying truths of whaling also act as limits to how humans understand whales. Other characters, and
Ishmael on occasion, either use or literally are manifestations of religious references, and these... Show

Mayhew represent forces attempting to answer the unanswerable when Mayhew begins to question
what makes Moby Dick so almighty and powerful. Eventually, it becomes evident in the case where
human knowledge is limited and fails to explain certain phenomena, the questions tend to receive
religious answers. Mayhew concludes that Moby Dick must be a creation of God because of the whale
s purity in color and a mass amount of power, providing a religious explanation for why Moby Dick is
both revered and feared. Later, Ishmael considers another aspect that contributes to the powers of Moby
Censorship Of Cargo Ships
Piracy on the open seas is becoming more threatening by the day. Ships are being hijacked and being
sold for ransom for millions of dollars. With ways that are being developed to help protect ships such as
fire hoses, flares, and barbed wire along the rails of the boats. They still do not guarantee a safe ride for
the cargo and crew onboard. Cargo ships should be allowed to carry weapons to protect from pirates and
other intruders.

Some say that there is a very slim chance of a ship being attacked by pirates. There are over 50,000
cargo ships all around the world so what are the chances?(Curry n.p.) But, more and more ships are
being captured around the world each day and those ships need to be protected 271 ships were
hijacked off the coast of Somalia in 2009, which is over 500 million dollars is cargo.(Gale n.p).
Because of this, the shipping companies are losing money by trying to transport things to people in

Female Characters In Peter Pan
The Repression of Female Characters in Peter Pan

At first glance, J. M. Barrie s Peter Pan appears to be an innocent literary depiction of a young boy who
wishes to never grow up thus, remaining a child. Peter Pan, the story s main protagonist, poses as the
mischievous and youthful boy who spends his eternal life seeking adventures and leading the Lost Boys
through the make believe island, Neverland. Peter acquires the company of a young British girl by the
name of Wendy Darling and her two little brothers, John and Michael Darling. In the company of the
British children, Pan travels back to Neverland to primarily utilise Wendy for her motherly expertise.
Further inquiry and literary analysis of the 1904 novel leads readers to believe there is more to the story
than what can be seen at first glance. Peter Pan is one of many novels subject to feminist literary criticism;
the novel displays an array of male characters with very few female characters to contrast. Furthermore,
female characters can be seen as passive, and frequently submit to paternal authority. In Peter Pan, women
are assigned specific roles that mirror the responsibilities of those in the Victorian Era. The demeaning and
gender stereotypical interpretation of women coupled with the encouragement of male dominance places
the story under criticism for its subjugation of women. In essence, the female characters are subject to the
gender stereotypes and societal norms of the Victorian era in which they are
Hamlet Strengths And Weaknesses
Strength is essential to overcome obstacles, however people in similar circumstances may have disparate
decisions, leading to various outcomes and consequences. In spite of all challenges, discouragements and
impossibilities; strength distinguishes a strong soul from a weak one. Through the literatures of William
Shakespeare, Miriam Toews and Lawrence Hill, it is evident that ethics and morality play an important
role in affecting decisions of the main characters. Assuredly, Hamlet, Naomi and Aminata, participate in
situations where their courage is tested to its fullest, impacting their fate; for the better and for the worse.
Despite bearing cultural and periodic differences, Hamlet by William Shakespeare, A Complicated
Kindnessby Miriam Toews and The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill all demonstrate judgements that
enrich and destroy the lives of the protagonists and of those around them. Firstly, Hamlet in Hamlet
shows dreadful judgement by consuming himself in revengeance, resulting in his own downfall. Hamlet
becomes obsessed with avenging his uncle, King Claudius for murdering his father, King Hamlet. As a
result of this, corruption takes hold of Hamlet s life, in which it becomes full of hatred, reprisal and
bloodlust. Hamlet questions himself of which act is more noble. Is it more noble to suffer from the
wrong deeds that one has done onto another or if it is more noble to end the suffering by fighting? In this
soliloquy, it is clear that Hamlet is torn between
Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick s Tendency
Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick s Tendencies: Queerness and Oppression

Over the last two decades or so, the idea of queerness is one that has been utilized and considered by
individuals and communities of marginalized sexualities and genders. The concept is one that has
attempted to broaden and deconstruct traditional notions of gender and sexuality in order to include all of
their incarnations as valid experiences and identities. Queerness endeavors to include all of those who
feel they are a part of it yet, seemingly, not everyone can be queer without changing the very nature of
queerness. Or can they? Queerness is a concept which resists borders and structure yet it seems as though
there must be certain commonalities among all queer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Despite the fact that this is probably not Sedgwick s intention, her construction of queerness highlights the
existence of a sexual and gender norm and simply clumps all abnormal sexualities and genders together
under the category of queerness. The interpretation of queerness as being a catch all category for
sexualities and genders which do not fit into the category of heterosexual, man, and woman, supports the
idea that queer status is a second class status because there is nothing particular about it other than the fact
that it is not normal.

Her attempt to create queerness as a sort of democracy in which each individual determines his/her
status as queer also has counterproductive consequences for queerness. Sedgwick, in an attempt to
shift the power of labeling someone as queer from the straight labeler to the queer labeled, robs
queerness of some of its potency and cohesion. For example, imagine queerness as being the popular
table in a middle school cafeteria. I can decide to label myself as queer and then feel entitled to be able
to sit at this table yet the students at the table can easily choose to reject me. If they do not reject me, and
allow anyone and everyone to sit at this table, then, in
A Brief Note On Fraud And Criminal Deception
Fraud
There are many definitions for the word fraud available from many sources, for example, dictionary.com
defines fraud in a fairly basic sense as deliberate, deception, trickery, or cheating intended to gain an
advantage (Dictionary.com, 2014). However for the case of this report, the definition by google.com is
more appropriate and thorough with wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or
personal gain (Google). In all instances in the definition of fraud however, it can be concluded that an act
or instance of fraud is goes breaks the rules of modern society, and as we shall soon see can frequently
break the rules of modern law, and lead to negative legal action against the perpetrators of the fraudulent
act. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Executives are unique in this sense since although other stakeholders may also have a financial interest in
the company, they are the only stakeholder that can make claims to the value of their financial interest.
Without auditors providing a (hopefully) unbiased opinion on managements assertions all other
stakeholders, particularly shareholders, would be at the mercy of managements claims.
Shareholders
Shareholders of public corporations hold a special relationship with regards to the public corporations in
modern business. Unlike many private companies shareholders of public corporations typically have no
direct control over operations of their businesses. As shareholders they are entitled to their proportion of
profits amassed by their company, through dividends, and are only limited in their potential losses as far
as they invested into the company. Furthermore, shareholders influences over the company, excluding
executives, only goes as far as having rights to vote proportionately to their earnings on a representative to
manage the company (the executives).

Waste Management The explanations of the positions discussed above are important to understand, as
they set the precedent of the roles of the different parties that were involved in the Waste Management

Summary Of Arm Wrestling With My Father By Brad Manning
In Arm Wrestling with my Father by Brad Manning uses: symbolism, tone, and imagery throughout his
story. What Manning s Story is about is Manning and his father s tough love bond they share. The story
shows us on how Manning s father shows his affection towards his son, and its not by expressing them
verbally or giving him affection, and attention like his motherwould. He would only show him that he
loved him through helping him in sports and arm wrestling. Throughout the story when Manning gets
older his father is at an old age where Manning can beat him. Manning let s his father win because he felt
sorry for his father and as Manning said his arms were the ones that protected them (Manning 124).

Manning described it so well I could clearly picture it in my head when Manning said I d shout, and it
would start. And I would tense up, concentrating and strainging and trying to push his wrist down to the
carpet with all my weight and strength. But Dad would always win; I always had to lose (Manning 121).
Manning would be upset but the word choice Manning uses for this section of the story is great imagery.
Another reason Manning didn t beat his father was that he was getting to an age where he isn t as
strong as he use to be. Manning describes his father s arm at first when Manning was a strong tree
branch but since he came back from school during winter break he said his arm looks aged (para7).
Another great example Manning uses for imagery. The theme of Arm Wrestling with my father how
Manning father gradually changes his method of affection he displays towards his son once Manning
is older. In the beginning of the story Manning tells us how his father did not show any attention on the
other achievements his son made in school like orchestra or his writing, only in sports. For example, as
Manning said It was not because he wasn t proud of Manning, it was probably because he just wanted
his son to be tough and strong like him or better. Manning s father did love Manning, but it was very
difficult for him to show his son he
