Program Note:
Music; Education explores and celebrates the many ways that different school subjects interact
with one another. This piece consists of four short “classes”: Math class, Science class, English
class, and Music class. Mimicking an abbreviated day at school, each section engages with
abstract and concrete concepts from its respective subject, applying them so that each movement
is a short etude, of sorts, on the given material. Math class focuses on counting, subdivision, and
polyrhythms. Science class encourages students to investigate their instrument by utilizing
extended techniques. English class associates several music genres with their literary counterparts
and quotes well known passages – be on the lookout for snippets of Bossa Novas, Jazz, a
Shakespearean rendition of Greensleeves, and several military marches – to name a few. Music
class synthesizes all these ideas by incorporating mixed time signatures to create a feeling of flow;
that sensation of time flying when we’re presented with enough of a challenge to stimulate but not
frustrate. This work was made collaboratively with the students of Mr. Barber’s band: brainstorming
to come up with ideas for the piece, workshopping the music, and even coming up with
performance suggestions. Kudos to the students for rising to the occasion and learning new
techniques. Dedicated to the BHS Wind Ensemble.
Artist Bio:
Daniel Wright is a composer, percussionist, and improvisor based in the GTA. Born and raised in the
Durham region, he attended Wilfrid Laurier University, and later the University of British Columbia
for his Masters. Interested in the intersections between music and theatre, he employs elements of
extended techniques and improvisation to help performers discover this space. Concerned with
what he observes every day, music helps him to explore social issues and approach them with
sound. His works have been performed by the Laurier Percussion Ensemble, Laurier Wind
Orchestra, TorQ Percussion Quartet, and with the KW composer collective The Yacht Club. He is
also an active performer in orchestras and music halls, having played with the Stratford Symphony
Orchestra, Richmond Hill Philharmonic Orchestra, Open Ears Festival, Luminato, and Oshawa
Little Theatre.
