[1] Read the following passage and answer the questions below:
On Jack’s birthday, Uncle Ted gave him a fishing rod. Uncle Ted took Jack and his sister
Mary to the river. They fished all day, but they didn’t see any fish.
The next day, they set up their rods and began fishing. But still no one caught a single
fish. Uncle Ted was very surprised because the stream should be full of fish this early on in the
season. Jack noticed an old building across the stream. Uncle Ted said that it was a ruin until a
few months ago, but then Sid Scrub and his brother, Harry bought the pump house. Now it’s a
small factory where material is hand-dyed.
Jack and Marry decided to set off along the bank towards the old building. It looked like
a ruin. All the windows had wooden boards over them. There were lots of tiles missing from
the roof and weeds grew out of gaps in the walls. At the front of the building was a gate. It was
locked with a heavy padlock. Suddenly Marry let out a gasp of horror, she saw lots of dead fish
trapped behind the grid. After many visits to the old building, Jack and Marry figured out that
the scrub were polluting the stream. They were pouring dirty waste liquid into the stream.
Uncle Ted and the children filmed the two brothers as they tipped the waste dyes into the
stream. Finally, they took the evidence to the local council inspector and asked him to take an
action against the Scrubs. They managed to save the environment and change the building into

Many animals in the world today are in danger. For many of them the biggest danger is
humans. People have always killed animals for their meat or their skins, others are killed
because they eat crops or animals which belong to farmers. Certain animals such as tigers and
elephants, used to live in great numbers in countries like India. People have hunted them so
much that there aren’t many left alive. However, there are now laws to stop this.
In South America many different birds and animals have lost their natural homes in the
forests because thousands of trees have been cut down or burnt. People then use the land for
farming or for building roads and towns.
We are too late to save some animals. A few are now extinct. There are none left
