1 Elements of Visual Media
When do you learn better, by reading texts only or by reading texts with other
visual presentations? Those visual presentations are also called Visual Media.
Visual media are sources of data or information in the form of visual representation
like cartoons, videos, memes, photography, screenshots, infographics, charts,
graphs, and visual note-taking.
Visual media have different elements that make it effective according to its
purpose.

designed for you to learn the different elements of visual media and learn how to
interpret its meaning based on how it is presented. After using this module, you are
expected to master different skills presented herein.

What is It
Activity 2: Hey learner! It is time to learn more
What are the things you see around you? What are they made of? All of them
show different elements of visual media. Let’s start from the simplest one. Basically,
visual media are made up of lines, and these things represent different values or
meanings based on how it is used in a media. Now, let us see how well you can
interpret the lines in this activity.
Below are the different forms of lines. Choose from the box the form that is
being interpreted in each item.
Thin Thick Broken Continuous Wavy

__________1. Suggest distance and calmness
__________2. Suggest height and strength
__________3. Suggest movement
__________4. Suggest comfort and ease
5
__________5. Suggest turmoil and anxiety
__________6. Express personal energy and mood
__________7. Lead the eye in certain directions
__________8. Can express the insubstantial
__________9. Express strength and emphasis
__________10.Express delicacy
Did you get them right? Check your answers here!
1. Horizontal
2. Vertical
3. Wavy
4. Curved
5. Jagged
6. Freehand

8. Broken
9. Thick
10. Thin
If you got a score of 9 and above, it is mind blowing! You can now proceed to
the next activity.
If you got 6 to 8 scores, you did your best! Also, you can now step forward
going to the next activity.
If your score is 5 below, do not worry. You can read again the meaning/
representations of different lines in the activity to get a better score in the final
activity.
Do you know that using lines, we can form another visual element?
What do you think is the visual element that we can form out of these lines?
By enclosing the lines, we can form another visual element which is SHAPE.
Shapes are enclosed space that are two dimensional. They are categorized
into two: Organic Shapes (come from nature) and Geometric Shapes
(formed using a compass or ruler).
Geometric shapes are common to us. Can you give some?
These are circles, squares, triangles, and more.
6
Different shapes also have different meanings or interpretation. Are you good
in interpreting shapes? Let us see as you do the activity below.
Activity 3: Enclose it if you mean it!
Connect the shapes to their meaning. Write the letter of your choice inside the
shape.
a. represent continues movement, infinity or completeness
b. portray strength and stability
c. lead the eye in an upward movement, may mean conflict, or power
d. create a sense of imbalance and tension
e. convey sense of formation and development, softness, sensuality,
flexibility and fluidity
1. 4.
3.
2. 5.
Check your answer by turning this page on page____.
Did you get all five correct answers?
Shapes can help us to identify what is in the image. It directs our eyes
into and around the image. It can also be used to control or evoke our moods
and feelings in the composition of a visual media.
Forming lines into shapes will be more exciting if we’ll add some colors. Color
is one of the most powerful elements of visual media. It can be associated with
different emotions or mood. It may also be used as symbol to communicate
ideas in a piece of media.
7
Let us discover more about colors in this activity.
Activity 4: I Can Feel Your Color
What feelings or emotions can you associate with the colors below?
1. 5.
2. 4. 6.
3. 7.
Hey! How was it? You may turn this on page___ to know if studies on color
representations and your answers agree on how you feel with these colors.
How’s your learning? Can you tell me if this module is helpful? Draw a big
happy face on your paper. Write the word YES below it.
To know more about colors, take time to analyze the infomercial below.

8
I hope you have realized something by looking at it. Do you want to learn
more visual media elements? If you do, let’s have more activities for you to discover
it.
Another visual element that goes with color is TONE or VALUE. Tone or
value pertains to the degree of light and dark in a design or maybe defined as
the contrast between black and white and all the tones in between. Light tones
may suggest happy feelings while dark tones may suggest gloominess and
fear. Combining light and dark tones in a visual media affects its impact to the
viewers.
Look at these examples.
CARAVAGGIO(c.1527-1610) JUAN SANCHEZ COTAN (1560-1627)
Basket of Fruit, 1595-96 (oil on canvas) Quince, Cabbage, Melon and Cucumber, 1602 (oil on canvas)
Source: https://www.artyfactory.com/art_appreciation/visual-elements/visual-elements.html
What can you say about the values or tones used in each picture?
What is the effect of the light toned background in the first picture?
What is the effect of the dark toned background in the second picture?
Dark toned images can be emphasized with light back grounds and light toned
images can be best emphasized with dark back grounds.
How do you find the activity?
What have you learned from it?
9
Now, let us talk about the last visual element included in this module. Are you
ready? The element that I am talking about is the SYMBOLS. Symbols are widely
used in visual media. It can be made of lines, shapes, colors, or combination
of the three wherein a concept is presented though an image. For example,
wings may symbolize freedom. Can you give other examples? Let us see how well
you can interpret the given symbols in the activity below.
Activity 5: What does it mean?
What does each picture symbolize? Choose the correct answer from the box
below.

The Lion and The Hare
Once in a forest there lived a lion who was very proud of his strength. He would kill any animal
which came in his way just for fun. All the animals in the forest were worried about their survival. “If
the lion keeps this up, none of us will be left in the forest”, said the bear. “He kills much more than he
really needs to”, squeaked the little hare. “We have to think of something to stop this massacre, let us
all join together and meet the lion”, said the monkey. They talked to the lion as planned. “O king of the
forest, we have come to make a small request”, they all said to the lion. “Now what would that be?”
asked the amused lion. “You are the king of the forest, but soon there will be no animals to rule over.
So we beg you to stop this unreasonable killing and we promise that one of us will come to you every
day for your food”. Pleaded all the animals. So from that day, the animals drew lots to decide on who
was to go to the lion as his prey. It’s time for the hare to be the lion’s prey and he came late. “You little
thing, how dare you come so late? How dare they send such a small animal? I will kill them all!” the
angry lion roared. “It is not my fault, O mighty lion. There were three other hares with me. But on the
way here, another lion attacked us. I just managed to escape. The other three hares were eaten by
that lion”, said the hare. “What? Another lion in my jungle? Take me to him immediately”, said the lion
in a fit of rage. The hare took the lion to the well and pointed it out to him from a distance. There
inside the well he could see another lion glaring at him. He jumped in and landed inside with a loud
splash.
