Lesson Topic – Computer Basics

I. Introduction (5 mins)
1. Introduce Instructor to the participants.

2. The lesson aims to provide the trainees the knowledge on


computer basics.

II. Computer Basics (15 mins)


TP – 1: Computer

- Computer refers to an electronic, magnetic, optical,


electrochemical, or other data processing or communications
device, or grouping of such devices, capable of performing
logical, arithmetic, routing, or storage functions and which
includes any storage facility or equipment or communications
facility or equipment directly related to or operating in
conjunction with such device.

- The operating system (OS) is the most important program


that runs on a computer. Every general-purpose computer
must have an operating system to run other programs and
applications.

- Computer operating systems perform basic tasks, such as


recognizing input from the keyboard, sending output to the
display screen, keeping track of files and directories on the
storage drives, and controlling peripheral devices, such as
printers.

- It covers any type of computer device including devices with


data processing capabilities like mobile phones, smart
phones, computer networks and other devices.

TP - 2: Computer System (20 mins)

Computer Hardware

- is the collection of physical components that constitute a


computer system. Computer hardware is the physical parts or
components of a computer, such as monitor, keyboard,

computer data storage, graphic card, sound card,
motherboard, and so on, all of which are tangible objects.

Devices that are connected inside motherboard

System unit – core hardware in computer system.

Peripheral device – hardware added to computer system to


expand what computer can do.

Software – are computer program tells how to perform


particular task.

TP –3: Standard Components of computer system divided into


three categories: (20 mins)

Main system components – parts of system unit.

Input/output components – devices consist of monitor,


keyboard, mouse, speaker and printer.

Data storage and retrieval component – hard drive of


computer, Cd rom and floppy disk drive.

Instructor’s Note: Ask the participants to give examples of each of the


computer components
