Abstract

This study explored the experiences of parents in teaching their children during the

pandemic in Tangub City, Misamis Occidental. Narrative Inquiry was employed to

document and describe the experiences of the participants. Using in-depth interviews of

10 participants picked using criterion purposive sampling, the qualitative data, analyzed

using Braun and Clarke analysis, arrived at four themes: (1) Teaching the children is the

role of the parents; (2) Parents lack content and pedagogy; (3) Parents study to teach their

children; and (4) Children learn better at school. The physical closure of schools due to

COVID-19 led to a rapid shift to remote learning, which placed more responsibility for

learning on parents and guardians. This new situation has affected families, namely, the

involvement required to support children’s learning at home. As one of the major

stakeholders in education, parents’ experiences with their children during remote learning

are worth examining. Findings revealed that parents supported their children by

answering the modules. Parents are having difficulties with balancing responsibilities,

motivation, accessibility, and learning outcomes. The overlapping responsibilities

challenge parents to remain effective in their responsibilities. The conveyance of greater

responsibilities has made them stronger. It is suggested that they continue their hard

work, perseverance, and aspirations for their children and not forget to manage their time

properly and set priorities. It is then recommended that parents be given the training to

improve their content and pedagogical knowledge to help their children answer the

modules.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents the significant literature and studies related to the research

conducted.

Learning during the Pandemic

School closures have necessitated changes in how students are evaluated and, in

some cases, caused serious disruptions (UNESCO, 2020). In most countries, exams have

been postponed; they have been canceled in a few. In others, they have been replaced by

continuous assessments or alternative modalities, such as online testing for final exams.

Innovative continuous assessment methods have received a lot of attention. Student

progress can be monitored with mobile phone surveys, tracking usage and performance

statistics from learning platforms and applications, and implementing rapid learning

assessments to identify learning gaps. Every solution has its own challenge, notably in

terms of equity (UNICEF, 2020).

Parents as Teachers

Parents are the first educators of their children. Their support affects children’s

development, learning, and subsequent educational outcomes. This includes direct

support to learning before and during formal education and indirect facilitating of factors

such as nutrition, health, and hygiene (UNESCO, 2021). Parental involvement is an

important factor for student achievement in traditional school settings. Parent support has

demonstrated significant contributions to learners' success in a virtual learning

3
environment (Borup et al., 2014; Feng & Cavanaugh, 2011; Lee & Figueroa, 2012;

Makrooni, 2019; Woofter, 2019). However, parents must take on new and unfamiliar

roles, and responsibilities as their children participate in online education while

experiencing increasing instructional responsibility for their child’s learning (Liu et al.,

2010). As a result, parents often struggle with understanding the role they should play in

their children’s online learning (Boulton, 2008; Murphy & Rodriguez-Manzanares,

2009).
