THE PROBLEM

Background of the Study

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines

that are designed to think, learn, and problem-solve like humans. AI is increasingly being
integrated into various aspects of daily life, including education, healthcare, business, and
entertainment. In schools, AI-powered tools and applications are being used to enhance
learning experiences, automate administrative tasks, and provide personalized education for
students (Russell & Norvig, 2021).

Senior high school students are among the groups significantly affected by the rise of
AI technology. They use AI-based applications such as virtual assistants, plagiarism checkers,
automated tutors, and research tools to facilitate their learning process. AI can help students
improve efficiency, accuracy, and access to information. However, the use of AI in education
also raises concerns, including academic dishonesty, over-reliance on technology, and the
potential decline in critical thinking and problem-solving skills (Selwyn, N., 2019).

The purpose of this study is to investigate the benefits and drawbacks of AI use among
seniors in high school. It will specifically examine how AI affects their learning process,
study habits, and academic achievement. The results of this study will provide light on how
artificial intelligence (AI) can be used in the classroom while minimizing any potential
negative effects.

CHAPTER II

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

This chapter presents a discussion of related literature and studies that may lead to a
better understanding of the theoretical and conceptual framework of the study.

Review of Related Literature

The literature and studies are arranged along the following major headings to conform
to the major concerns of this study, namely: 1) Impact of AI in Academic Performance; 2)
Benefits and Advantages of AI in Senior High School Education; 3) Challenges, Limitations,
and Risks of AI in Senior High School Education 4.) Responsible use of AI in learning; 5.)
Role in Enhancing Learning

Impact of AI in Academic Performance

Dealing with the impact of Al on learning and teaching in academic, it is evident that Al
will impact academic performance in many ways (Taneri, 2020). For instance, Ma and Siau
(2018) maintain that AI will speed consistency and accuracy in curriculum. Indeed, focusing
on the learning and teaching process, no one would doubt that Al is replacing the lecturer or
tutor in many ways, such as blended learning and e-learning. The presence of an e-learning
lecturer is limited as the learner interacts with a virtual classroom, whether on Blackboard,
Moodle, Turnitin or any other platform (Ju & Laurie A, 2018). Equally, Professor Roland T
Chin from Hong Kong Baptist University (2018) believes that Al is meant to revolutionise
how we learn, teach, work, live, make decisions, and be ready for the Al era. Therefore, Al is
not only about its superficial effect, but about radical changes in the teaching and learning
process in depth (Chin, 2018).

Benefits and Advantages of AI in Senior High School Education

Artificial Intelligence (AI) helps senior high school students by making learning more
personal, improving interactions, and improving assessments. AI chatbots and adaptive
learning systems adjust to the learning styles of students, making instructions more
understandable (Pimentel et al., 2024). AI also enhances critical thinking through interactive
activities (Amjad et al., 2024) and also improves the accessibility of education for students in
rural areas (Brink, 2024). As AI keeps evolving, learning experiences will keep being
improved.

Challenges, Limitations, and Risks of AI in Senior High School Education

The potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to revolutionize senior high school education
is undeniable, offering personalized learning, efficient administration, and expanded
resources for student success. However, integrating AI requires careful consideration of both
its technological capabilities and its impact on the learning process. While AI excels at
automating tasks and providing data-driven insights, it cannot replicate the human qualities of
empathy, creative problem-solving, and nuanced understanding vital for effective teaching
and learning. (Holmes & Tuomi, 2022). Over-dependence on AI for assessment and feedback
could inadvertently limit opportunities for the crucial discussions and reflective thinking that
foster deeper learning and critical analysis (Facione, 2020). The emergence of generative AI
also raises ethical concerns, particularly the risk of academic dishonesty if students use AI-
generated content without proper attribution (Qadir, 2023). Therefore, a successful
integration of AI in education necessitates a balanced approach that harnesses its strengths
while addressing its limitations and ethical implications to ensure its positive contribution to
the learning environment.

Responsible use of AI in learning

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has significantly transformed the learning experience by

automating tasks, personalizing recommendations, and assisting in decision-making across
various fields. In education, AI-powered tools enhance learning by providing instant access to
information, facilitating research, and improving efficiency. However, its responsible use is
crucial to maintaining academic integrity and ensuring ethical learning practices.

According to Hough (2023), the irresponsible use of AI in assessments can lead to

academic misconduct, prompting educators to investigate further. Keeping a full record of AI
interactions allows students to demonstrate transparency, reflect on their learning process,
and uphold integrity in their work. Responsible AI usage involves utilizing it as a supplement
to critical thinking rather than a replacement for original thought. By maintaining ethical
standards, students can harness AI's potential while fostering independent learning and
academic honesty.

Role in Enhancing Learning

Studies by Malik et al. (2023) and Lipalam et al. (2023), suggest that AI writing tools
have the potential to enhance the academic writing performance of Filipino students,
particularly in terms of grammar, syntax, and overall writing quality. However, further
research is required to comprehensively understand their long-term effects on learning
outcomes and address potential issues related to over-reliance and plagiarism.
