How to overcome procrastination?
Hook/Intro:
So, you're hoping for a miracle to happen and completely change your habit to delay
your everyday tasks, and you've almost tried all those internet tips, but instead of getting
things done, you just keep wasting time.
Sound familiar? Well, today I'm gonna tell you how I struggled with the exact same
problem and how I finally got out of it.
The method I am going to explain later is my personal technique. And I am sure it will
work for you if you just stick around till the end of the video.
My name is Sibtain Haider, and I make videos about stuff nobody else talks about.
So, without wasting your time. Lets start by understanding what procrastination actually
is?
History of Procrastination:
Well, based on my extensive research (which, by the way, I haven’t actually done),
procrastination is simply the art of delaying everyday tasks.
And guess what? It’s been around for a long time! In fact, back in 700 BC, a guy named
Hesiod, who lived in ancient Greece, warned people about the dangers of putting things
off and being lazy in his poems.
Other great minds, like Plato and Seneca, also discussed it, linking it to a lack of self-
control.
But back then, not everyone saw procrastination as a bad thing. In fact, some even
thought it was wise to delay actions in order to think things through carefully.
Then came the 1800s, during the Industrial Revolution.
People were working in factories, racing to get things done. Time was money, and there
was no room for delays! But, surprise surprise, people still procrastinated.
Many were scared to start because they feared they might mess things up.
As time went on, people started placing more value on time management.
Time became seen as this precious commodity, so any delay was now viewed as a
waste.
That’s when procrastination began to be seen as a real problem that needed fixing.
Fast forward to today, and everything changed with technology.
Books were replaced by smartphones, and suddenly, procrastination went from a minor
issue to a major problem that affects all of us.
That’s a quick history of procrastination.
Now, let me share how I beat it — and how you can too.
But before we dive into the solution, let me tell you a bit about my story.
My Story:
I was a mid-level artist who loved mixing music and sketching, but I had this problem
that wasted my time and kept me stuck.
I couldn't focus on my other hobbies or even school. Every night I'd promise myself,
"Tomorrow I'll catch up on everything!"
If I had to describe that feeling in one word, I'd say "Dungeon." I felt trapped! I tried so
hard to break free, but nothing worked.
Then one night, I was smoking on my rooftop, and a question popped into my head...
I ask myself, “Is procrastination helping me or just ruining my life?”
I wasn't sure what exactly made me so lazy, so I grabbed a notepad and pen and
started searching for answers.
I wrote down all the habits and reasons I thought were holding me back. I smoked and
wrote, not even noticing how many cigarettes I went through.
Eventually, maybe in the middle of my 12th cigarette, I have a complete Booklet in my
hand, full of my excuses.
Here is the structure I followed,
The beginning of my pamphlet was full of reasons and questions,
REASONS:
You know what?
Finding the real cause of procrastination is super hard for most people.
I tried pretty much everything to fix this problem, but this one method was the only thing
that helped me. And I'm 100% sure you can find your root cause in just one night too.
How does it work? Listen up.
If I ask who's the main character in your life story, what would you say? That's right – it's
YOU! You're the star of your own life.
So who knows what's really going on in your life and can take control of it? Yup, that's
you again!!!
Here's the cool part: you only need ONE night to change your whole life...
For just one night, go outside without your phone or anything else that might distract
you. Just bring a pen and paper.
And all night, just ask huge questions while strolling through the streets,
When do you procrastinate? Identify specific tasks or situations where procrastination
happens.
How do you procrastinate? Note what activities you do instead (e.g., scrolling social
media, watching TV).
How do you feel during procrastination? Are you stressed, overwhelmed, bored, or
indifferent?
After you get these answers, think about what's causing you to procrastinate. Am I
trying to be too perfect instead of just starting? Do I lack motivation? Are there too many
distractions around me? Can't I manage my time well?
For about 99% of people, the answer is "too many distractions" – that was my answer
too!
Now it's time to actually do something about it – and it's simpler than you think.
Take Action:
Now you know what's holding you back and have a list of your problems. Let's move on
to solutions. And remember – the solution is usually pretty simple.
Like I said, almost everyone has the same problem: Distractions. Maybe you open
Instagram and just keep scrolling and scrolling.
Then suddenly it's the middle of the night and you realize you've wasted the whole
day... {Ughhhh!!! Who isn't annoyed by those addictive Instagram algorithms these
days?}
{Pause for 3 seconds}
Let me ask you something else, friend!
What would you do to break free from social media distractions?
What worked for me was simply deleting the app, but after a month, I was started
craving social media like. So I downloaded it again and just deactivated my account
instead... {Pretty awesome trick, right?}
You should try the same thing – it works almost every time.
Now, most of your "reasons" are really just excuses.
If you think, "I can't work unless someone's pushing me or guiding me," that's just an
excuse.
Nobody's coming to rescue you unless you have the guts to start and stay consistent. If
it were that easy, everyone would be making millions…
Here's the truth!
There's one thing both successful and unsuccessful people hate: effort.
If you don't learn to enjoy the hard work, you'll never reach your goals.
Just imagine having a dream car, tons of money in your bank account, your dream
partner, and a huge mansion with amazing vibes.
Really try to feel it – if you can feel it, you can make it happen!
Just spend some time with yourself instead of scrolling on social media.
Trust me, social media is both the worst addiction and most powerful tool at the same
time. Learn to use it to your advantage. Don't let it control you.
This method doesn’t end here; there’s still so much more to it.
Wrap up all Excuses:
Now, you have written down pretty much every reason on the page, and have the clarity
that it doesn’t make sense; After you realize that this habit is wasting your time. Then it
will be the right time for you to wrap it up, but in a simple way.
Don’t make it a burden, pick up one cause from your list that makes you stuck, and
would be the easiest one, obviously.
Then take your time to deal with it, whether how much time it will take you, it may take
days and sometimes even weeks to tackle one cause.
After you succeed, move to the second cause and clear it. That’s how it works.
You just have to believe in yourself. This isn’t that hard, you may feel it hard in the
beginning, but after a month, you’ll become addicted.
Well! While you are erasing all those causes from your life,
keep in mind to never give up, if you genuinely want to achieve something in your life,
for the first time. Makes sense, right?
But here is the best tip, it is so important in this whole process, that if you forget to use
it, the whole process will become worthless.
Which is “find something that can be the best replacement for your procrastination
cause.”
Simply, choose anything that you love. If you are confused, just start making any kind of
content on YouTube or social media,
But Mr. Sibtain's social media is the biggest problem we are facing,
Ok, don’t delete your account if you are courageous enough to start your channel, and
do not waste your time.
Here is the advice to start a channel!
Don’t try to become a professional overthinker,
it will never work for you. Instead of opening up all 57 working Google tabs of your
brain,
just start by making useless content using your mobile phone, and see how creative
ideas will come…
Now you know what procrastination is, how it is affecting us, and what the history of
procrastination is, and to put it in a nutshell,
I am reminding you that in this video I’ve shared my personal experience,
How I overcame it,
