When was the last time you had silence around you?
Every day, from the moment we wake up, a cacophony of
blaring sounds surrounds us—from clamorous cars to
roaring background chatter and music in malls, schools,
and bustling streets. Many of us have experienced this and
have often tried to drown out the unwanted noise. But do
we really understand the impact of living and growing in
such an environment?

Introduction: The Noise You Never Noticed


Have you ever considered how much noise surrounds your
daily life? From the moment you step out of your home to
the time you head to bed, there’s a constant buzz — car
horns, crowded hallways, loud music, and non-stop
chatter. But is this just part of modern life, or is it slowly
damaging our well-being?

What the Researcher Revealed


A recent lecture focused on the impact of noise on young
people and revealed some alarming truths. The speaker
explained how excessive noise — whether from busy
roads, school cafeterias, or even loud television — can
interfere with concentration, affect mental health, and
contribute to long-term hearing issues. One key point was
that many young people don’t even realise how much
noise surrounds them daily. The researcher also pointed
out how schools, instead of offering peaceful learning
environments, often add to the problem through
undisciplined classes and loud environments. This shows
how we have normalised chaos to the point where silence
feels strange.

What Can We Do About It?


The expert proposed some solutions, such as raising
awareness about the risks, encouraging quieter homework
spaces, and avoiding the habit of playing loud music just
for background sound. Creating noise-free zones in
schools or reducing traffic noise around campuses could
also help. But it’s not just up to schools — we, the
students, need to play our part. Being mindful about the
volume of our music or choosing to spend a few moments
in silence could go a long way.

My Thoughts: Finding the Balance


While the lecture made strong points, I believe not all
noise is harmful. Some sounds — like soft music or
laughter — can be comforting. However, I’ve also
experienced the pressure of always being surrounded by
sound. So, it’s about balance. Too much silence may be
boring, but too much noise can be overwhelming.

Conclusion: Tune In, Turn Down


Noise isn’t always the enemy, but being aware of it is
important. Next time your world feels too loud, ask
yourself: is all this noise helping or hurting me? It’s time
we turned down the volume — for our peace, focus, and
health.
