Assignment Task: Understanding and Creating Game Design Documentation (GDD)

Scenario:

You are part of a student indie game development team working on a 2D adventure game called
“Temple Runner: The Scroll Hunt.”

In this game, a brave explorer must:

• Navigate through dangerous temples,

• Solve puzzles,
• Collect magical scrolls,

• Avoid traps, and


• Escape before time runs out.

Your job is to create a mini Game Design Document (GDD) for this project by answering the
following questions using the principles of design documentation.

Task Sections:

1. Game Overview

• What is the name and genre of the game?

• Who is the target audience?


• What platforms will it run on?

• Summarize the game in 3-4 lines.

2. Gameplay Mechanics

• List 3 core mechanics (e.g., running, jumping, collecting scrolls).


• Describe how these mechanics interact and create gameplay.

• What is the player’s goal in each level?

3. Story and Game World

• Briefly describe the background story of the game.


• Who is the main character? What motivates them?

• What kind of world is this game set in?

4. Visual and Audio Design


• What will the game's visual style be like? (Cartoonish, realistic, 2D pixel art, etc.)
• What kind of sound/music will enhance the game’s experience?

5. User Interface and HUD

• What elements should be shown on screen during gameplay? (e.g., score, timer, health)

• Sketch or describe the layout of the main menu.


6. Level Design

• Describe what a sample level would look like.

• What makes levels harder or more interesting as the game progresses?

7. Technical and Development Details
