Chess Beginner Guide: Visual Workbook
Part 1: The Chessboard and Pieces
The chessboard is made up of 64 squares in an 8x8 grid. The bottom-right square should always be a light
square.
Each player starts with 16 pieces: 8 Pawns, 2 Knights, 2 Bishops, 2 Rooks, 1 Queen, and 1 King.
- Rooks move horizontally or vertically.
- Knights move in an L-shape (2 + 1).
- Bishops move diagonally.
- Queens move like both rooks and bishops.
- Kings move one square in any direction.
- Pawns move forward but capture diagonally.
Part 2: Movement Drills
Practice each piece:
1. Move your rook from corner to corner.
2. Use the knight to jump to all squares in a spiral.
3. Try controlling diagonals with your bishop.
4. Move pawns forward and practice promotion.
Special Moves:
- Castling: King and rook switch sides for safety.
- En Passant: Special pawn capture.
- Promotion: Pawn reaches the end and becomes a queen.
