1.0. OBJECTIVE
To protect the safety and health of the environment and personnel who come into contact
with waste, by providing reasonable measures for avoiding and minimising the generation of
waste; reducing, re-using, recycling and recovering waste; treating and safe disposal of
waste.

The handling of waste is managed as a minimum through the following applicable

3. Definitions
Waste:
(a) any substance, material or object, that is unwanted, rejected, abandoned, discarded or
disposed of, or that is intended or required to be discarded or disposed of, by the holder of
that substance, material or object, whether or not such substance, material or object can be
re-used, recycled or recovered and includes all wastes as defined in Schedule 3 to this Act;
Hazardous waste means any waste that contains organic or inorganic elements or
compounds that may, owning to the inherent physical, chemical or toxicological
characteristics of that waste, have a detrimental impact on health and the environment, as
defined in the National Environmental Management: Waste Act, 2008 (Act No. 59 of 2008)
4. Waste Classification / Waste Streams
Wastes that do not require Classification (Reg 4(1) or Assessment (Reg 8(1) (a)
(a) General waste- Head Office and site
• Business waste not containing hazardous waste or hazardous chemicals;
• Garden waste;
• Waste packaging;
• Health Care Risk Waste (sanitation waste in the female lavatories)

(b) Hazardous Waste – SITE
Hazardous Waste resulting from products used during mechanical maintenance
work other related work that requires the use Hazardous chemical substances
Hazardous waste mostly used includes the following : used Oil , grease, cleaning
chemicals and paint
Waste on site is transported and disposed by an approve certified contractor on
site.
Safety Data Sheets
R5(1) Subject to Regulation 4(2) and sub regulations (2) and (3), generators of
hazardous waste must ensure that a safety data sheet for the hazardous waste is
prepared in accordance with SANS 10234.
(c) Scrap Metal Waste – SITE
All metal waste generated during the process of conducting work on site shall be
disposed of in a correct manner. off cuts from grinding activities, old or defective
mechanical components should be disposed of at the metal skip
Colour coded Metal Waste skips are collected by the Client once full
No recycling of metal waste allowed.
5. Waste Management
All waste generated on site is identified as part of the Environmental Risk Assessment
process and classified as per the above waste definitions in the Waste Management
Plan / Monthly SHE Report.
5.1. General requirements for storage and handling of waste
Waste is stored under the following guidelines:
Any container or storage impoundment holding waste must be labelled, or where
labelling is not possible, records must be kept, reflecting the following-
the date on which waste was first placed in the container;
the date on which waste was placed in the container for the last time when the
container was filled, closed, sealed or covered;

the dates when, and quantities of, waste added and waste removed from
containers or storage impoundments, if relevant;
the specific category or categories of waste in the container or storage
impoundment as identified in terms of the National Waste Information
Regulations, 2012; and
the classification of the waste in terms of Regulation 4 once it has been
completed.
Waste generators must ensure that their waste is re-used, recycled, recovered,
treated and/or disposed of within eighteen (18) months of generation.
Waste storage vessels are intact and not corroded and fit for the safe storage of
waste; waste bins should be clearly identifiable as hazardous waste, general
waste, recyclable waste (recyclable plastic, paper and cardboard).
The waste should be protected from pests and the wind by suitable covers
Nuisances such as odour, visual impacts should be avoided by regular
inspections and waste removal.
Waste should be removed from the production areas and taken to a Demarcated
Waste Area on a regular basis

6. Hazardous Waste Control- SITE
All Hazardous chemicals on site need to be managed through a register and the relevant
Hazard Identification Risk Assessment and Environmental Risk Assessment.
• Hazardous and other waste should be separated and marked Hazardous chemical
substance waste and colour coded.
7. Waste Management Records
the classification of the wastes;
the quantity of each waste generated, expressed in tons or cubic metres per month;
The quantities of each waste that has either been re-used, recycled, recovered,
treated or disposed of; and whom the waste was managed.

Waste records on site are kept by the client responsible for collecting and
transporting of waste on site
Public Bonds and complies with waste management procedure from the client
Public Bonds and Projects report to the client when waste bund is full.
8. Collection, transporting and disposal of waste
Waste may only be collected for removal from the premises by the following:
• A municipality or municipal service provider; - Head office waste is collected by municipality
• All other waste transporters require a relevant permit
Any person engaged in the transportation of waste must take all reasonable steps to prevent
any spillage of waste or littering from a vehicle used to transport waste.
Prohibition of unauthorised disposal
Waste may not be disposed of (knowingly or negligently) in, on any land, water body, or at
any facility unless the disposal of that waste is authorised by law.
Waste Handlers / Companies
All waste handlers are required to be licensed in terms of the Act and the copies of all the
relevant waste permits for the various service providers should be kept on file.
Copies of all written agreements or contracts with Waste Handlers are required to be kept on
site.
As part of the cradle to grave life cycle all Waste handlers are required to be audited once
every two years
9. Waste Disposal to Landfill (Disposing of Waste is the responsibility of the Client)
Unless otherwise directed by the Minister to ensure a better environmental outcome, or in
response to an emergency so as to protect human health, property or the environment-
Waste generators must ensure that their waste is assessed in accordance with the
Norms and Standards for Assessment of Waste for Landfill Disposal set in terms of
section 7(1) of the Act prior to the disposal of the waste to landfill.

accordance with the Norms and Standards for Disposal of Waste to Landfill set in
terms of section 7(1) of the Act; and

Waste managers disposing of waste to landfill must only do so in accordance with
the Norms and Standards for Disposal of Waste to Landfill set in terms of section
7(1) of the Act.
10. Emergency Incidents
Risks involving waste are identified as part of the Environmental Risk Assessment and all
incidents or accidents are managed through the Emergency Response Procedure and the
Control of Non-conformity Procedure.
Refer to section 30 of NEMA, Section 20 of the National Water Act
11. Training needs Identification
Training needs specific to Waste Handling are identified and are addressed through the
SHEQ Training Matrix
12. Waste Reporting
This covers the quantities of waste disposed and recycled by the premises in the preceding
year supplementary information (Waste generated) and the waste management system
details of the premises, as detailed in paragraph 7 above.
