INVERTING AND NON INVERTING AMPLIFIERS USING OP-AMPS
AIM:To design and verify the operation of an op-amp as an Inverting and
Non-Inverting amplifier using 741 op-amp.
APPARATUS:
IC 741
Resistors
Breadboard
±15V DC Power Supply
Connecting Leads
THEORY:
Inverting Amplifier:
In this configuration, the input signal is applied to the inverting
input of the op-amp through resistor R₁, and the non-inverting
input is grounded.
A feedback resistor Rf is connected from the output to the
inverting input.
Voltage Gain (Av): Av = -Rf / R1
The negative sign indicates a 180° phase shift between input and
output.
Non-Inverting Amplifier:
Here, the input is applied to the non-inverting terminal, and the
inverting terminal is connected to the output through Rf, and to
ground through R1.
Voltage Gain (Av): Av = 1 + Rf / R1
Output is in phase with input and amplified.
CIRCUIT DIAGRAMS:

[B] Non-Inverting Amplifier
PROCEDURE:
For Inverting Amplifier:
Connect the circuit as per diagram (A).
Apply input signal to inverting input (pin 2), keep pin 3 grounded.
Use R₁ = 1kΩ and Rf = 2kΩ.
Observe the amplified output, verify gain.
For Non-Inverting Amplifier:
Connect the circuit as per diagram (B).
Apply input signal to non-inverting input (pin 3), with feedback
network from output to pin 2.
Use same resistor values.
Observe the amplified output, verify gain.
OBSERVATIONS:
[A] Inverting Amplifier
[B] Non-inverting Amplifier
RESULT:
The operation of the IC 741 as both Inverting and Non-Inverting Amplifier is verified.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
1.What are the key differences between inverting and non-inverting op-amp
configurations?
2.How does the resistor ratio affect the gain?
