Module 4 - Emotionally Intelligent Attitudes and Behavior

Core Values

Introduction
Your Health = Your Success, Treat your body well - eat right, challenge your body, get proper sleep, be
active and meditate -- and you'll reward yourself with more energy, greater focus, and a heightened
level of discipline.

Introduction to Biohacking
Biohacking is the desire to be the absolute best version of ourselves. The main thing that separates a
biohacker from the rest of the self- improvement world is a systems-thinking approach to our own
biology. You know how coffee feels like a shot of energy to your brain? Pre-coffee you is
sleepy....zzzzzz… Post-coffee you is WIDE AWAKE! What you put into your body has an ENORMOUS
impact on how you feel. We all know this. What we eat and drink is one way we alter our state. Music is
another way to Biohack yourself! If you put on smoooooooooooth jazzzzzzzz, you’ll feel different than if
you blast T-T- T-TECHNO. The things we put in our stomach and ears are inputs into our biology.

4 Rituals to Change Your Day


• Meditation helps you start the day clean, focused and grateful. Even meditating for 5
minutes can change the way your day unravels.
• Read for a few minutes (20’ ideally) Read about things that you like, politics, history,
economics, read a novel, but take the time to learn something new every morning.
• Exercising can help you improve your energy, promote emotional well-being, and enhance
concentration and mental alertness.
• Journaling can be used as a tool for capturing ideas to help improve your career and
relationships. Some people even like to use journaling for goal setting purposes or for
planning out their future.

Journaling
By putting your thoughts into written word, you engage in creative process that allows you to
brainstorm effective solutions and explore new lines of thinking. One of the simplest journaling practices
is simply doing a little reflection on the past, positive thinking to increase happiness, and planning for
the day to promote growth. Answer the following questions before you start your day:
● What was something awesome about yesterday?
● What was something that could have been improved yesterday?
● What is something that you are thankful for today?
● What would make today great?

Journaling as needed
Besides a routine of journaling, sometimes it is just helpful to write out reflections on a specific topic
that is floating around in your head. When you need to reflect it helps you improve the future. Write out
what has worked and was hasn’t...what I could have changed and what was out of my control. Most
importantly, set goals for the next days/months.

When you need to make a plan:


Do you need to strategize for a project? Journaling is a great way to brainstorm potential paths to
completing a task, and often provides the clarity of thought needed to lay out what the necessary steps
are to ensure success. As entrepreneurs, we often need to use this type of as-needed journaling to plan
out a marketing push, or new feature for our products.

When you need to process a situation:


Sometimes our perception of a situation can cripple us. Whether it is something that has happened in
the past or is coming in the future, we can sometimes over or under-react in a way that is not healthy.
Journaling helps to provide perspective on a situation, and assists our brains in properly processing it in
a way that fosters a healthy outlook. This in-turn reduces stress, which allows us to function better and
get more done.

7 Habits of Highly Effective people

1. Be Proactive
There are two types of people, Reactive, and Proactive Reactive people take a passive stance --
they believe the world is happening to them. They say things like: "There's nothing I can do." &
"That's just the way I am." They think the problem is "out there", but that thought is the
problem. Reactivity becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Proactive people, however, recognize
they have responsibility -- or "response-ability" which is the ability to choose how you will
respond to a given stimulus or situation.

2. Begin with the End in Mind


In everything we do, we should begin with the end in mind. Start with a clear destination. That
way, we can make sure the steps we're taking are in the right direction. If you know what the
end goal is, you can always check that every step is aligned with the final destination.

3. Put first things FIRST


In order to manage ourselves effectively, we must put first things first. We must have the
discipline to prioritize our day-to-day actions based on what is most important, not what is most
urgent. Divide your tasks and place them in the quadrant below (next slide) All activities can be
categorized based on two factors: Urgent and important. Take a look at this time management
matrix.
4. Think WIN-WIN
Most people operate with the Scarcity Mentality -- meaning they act as though everything is
zero-sum (in other words, if you get it, I don't). People with the Scarcity Mentality have a very
hard time sharing recognition or credit and find it difficult to be genuinely happy about other
people's successes. When it comes to interpersonal leadership, the more genuine our character
is, the higher our level of proactivity; the more committed we are to Win-Win, the more
powerful our influence will be. To achieve Win-Win, keep the focus on results, not methods; on
problems, not people.

5. Seek to Understand more than to be Understood


Before we can offer advice, suggest solutions, or effectively interact with another person in any
way, we must seek to deeply understand them and their perspective through empathic
listening. Most of us listen, only hoping to get the change to speak. Take your time to
understand the other person, what are they going through, and what kind of support they need,
THEN, share your thoughts or advice.

6. Synergize
By understanding and valuing the differences in another person's perspective, we have the
opportunity to create synergy, which allows us to uncover new possibilities through openness
and creativity. The combination of all the other habits prepares us for Habit 6, which is the habit
of synergy or "When one plus one equals three or more and the whole is greater than the sum
of its parts." For example, if you plant two plants close together, their roots will co-mingle and
improve the quality of the soil, so that both plants will grow better than they would on their
own.

7. Sharpen the saw


To be effective, we must devote the time to renewing ourselves physically, spiritually, mentally,
and socially. Continuous renewal allows us to synergistically increase our ability to practice each
habit. Habit 7 surrounds all of the other habits and makes each one possible by preserving and
enhancing your greatest asset -- yourself. There are four dimensions of our nature, and each
must be exercised regularly, and in balanced ways: Physical, Spiritual, Mental & Social.

Values
Personal Values and Organizational Values Understanding your personal values is the first step to self-
awareness. As the leader your personal values may be one of the most important determinants of how
the your power is exercised or constrained. The leader’s perceptions and behavior will also set the tone
for how the organization conducts itself.

Your Hero and Their Values - “Your values should be non-negotiable.” - Paula Mills
Instrumental values include the values that we use on a regular basis to make decisions about our life
and work. These can include values like hard work, honesty, independence, capable, responsible,
imaginative, forgiving, polite, clean, cheerful and courageous. These values are given different weight by
different individuals. They are a means to an end.

End (terminal) values


Generally reflect lifelong aspirations such as gaining wisdom, bringing about peace or having a
sustainable environment. These values include things like freedom, self respect, a comfortable life,
social recognition, wisdom, contentedness, equality, a world at peace, national security and salvation.
Terminal Values refer to desirable end-states of existence. These are the goals that a person would like
to achieve during his or her lifetime.

6 Human Needs
Four needs of personality:
1. Certainty
2. Variety
3. Significance
4. Love & connection

Two needs of Spirit:

6. Contribution

YOUR VALUES
Towards values: What is most important to you in your life? eg. Authenticity, love, family, health,
growth Away from Values: What do you avoid/not want to feel? eg. Guilt, regret, hurt, stress, loneliness

•What, How, Why reminds you why your company exists. Next, you’ll add detail:
•Top 3 Values makes your why more specific.
•Top 3 Audiences helps you prioritize the target for your brand. Finally, you’ll position your brand
relative to others:
•Personality Sliders defines the attitude and style of your brand. Competitive Landscape

What is a SWOT Analysis, and why is it important?


The SWOT analysis is a simple yet powerful tool for identifying personal and professional strengths and
is best approached with an open mind and the use of creative thinking and brainstorming.
