INTRODUCTION
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or
Global Goals were adopted in 2015 by the
United Nation. It consists of 17 interdependent
goals that act as a universal call to deal with
global challenges based on social, economy and
environmental factors. They understand that
action in one will impact others, the
development has to balance the three factors.
These Global Goals guarantee that by 2030,
every human being enjoys peace and prosperity.

Poverty is one of the principal obstacles to
development in the Philippines, particularly in rural
and disadvantaged communities. Generally,
eliminating poverty in all its manifestations continues
to be one of humanity's greatest challenges. The SDGs
represent a strong pledge to complete what we have
undertaken, and eliminate poverty in all forms and

SDG 10: REDUCED INEQUALITIES
Income and social inequality remain challenges, especially
among indigenous groups and people with disabilities are
still one of the issues faced by many Filipino. One of the
important goal is to empower social, economic, and
political inclusion, ensure equal opportunity, and implement
policies that promote equality.
SDG 11: SUSTAINABLE CITIES AND
COMMUNITIES
Income and social inequality remain challenges, especially
among indigenous groups and people with disabilities are
still one of the issues faced by many Filipino. One of the
important goal is to empower social, economic, and
political inclusion, ensure equal opportunity, and implement
policies that promote equality.
SDG 12: RESPONSIBLE
CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION
The Philippines faces issues such as excessive plastic waste,
inefficient use of resources, and pollution from industries
and households especially in urbanized areas. It aims
promote sustainable practices, reduce waste generation,
and encourage businesses and consumers to adopt
environmentally friendly habits.
ADDITIONAL FACT!
In
. 2024, the UNEP Food Waste I nd ex Report i n di c ated th at
Philippine households was te approx i mately 2 .95 mi l l i on ton n es of
food annually, whi ch translates to 26 kg per person . T h i s i s a
significant decrease from the 9 .33 mi lli on tonn es rep orted i n
2021.

The Philippi nes also produc es about 2,175

tons of food waste dai ly. Ri ce, vegetables,
and meat are the top three mos t wasted
foods, with ri ce accounti ng for the larges t
portion, according to the DOST - FNRI study.

SDG 13: CLIMATE ACTION
The Philippines is highly vulnerable to climate-related
disasters such as typhoons, flooding, and droughts and is
also part of the pacific ring of fire. Despite of the economic
and social goal, climate action should become top priority
for ensuring environmental sustainability as well as disaster
risk reduction to strengthen resilience, integrate climate
measures in policies, and improve education and awareness
on climate change.
SDG 14: LIFE BELOW WATER
Marine life is vital to the Philippines as it supports food
security, provides livelihoods for millions, protects coastal
communities from natural disasters, and sustains one of the
world’s richest marine biodiversity zones. Overfishing,
pollution, and destruction of coral reefs threaten marine
biodiversity in the Philippines. SDG 14 aims to reduce
marine pollution, protect marine ecosystems, regulate
fishing, and support small-scale fishers.
ADDITIONAL FACT!
The Philippines presents unique coastal, marine and island
biodiversity. It is indeed located within the Coral Triangle, at the
center of highest marine biodiversity.

The Coral Triangle (CT) is a roughly

triangular area in the tropical waters
around Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New
Guinea, the Philippines, Solomon
Islands, and Timor-Leste. This area
contains at least 500 species of reef-
building corals in each ecoregion.

SDG 15: LIFE ON LAND
Protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of terrestrial
ecosystems. Deforestation, habitat loss, and illegal wildlife
trade are key environmental issues in the Philippines.
The goal is to combat desertification, halt deforestation,
restore degraded forests, and conserve biodiversity.

SDG 16: PEACE , JUSTICE , AND
STRONG INSTITUTIONS
This objective aims to decrease violence, uphold the rule of
law, and make institutions transparent, accountable, and
inclusive. For the Philippines, this involves dealing with
corruption, human rights abuses, poor law enforcement, and
limited access to justice, particularly for vulnerable groups.
Peace and good governance are crucial to building a stable
environment where development can flourish.
SDG 17: PARTNERSHIPS FOR
THE GOAL
Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the
global partnership for sustainable development. The
Philippines needs stronger collaboration with global,
regional, and local partners to achieve its development
goals. One of the goal is t o enhance financial support,
technology transfer, policy coordination, and inclusive
partnerships for sustainable development.

INSTITUTIONAL
ROLES AND
PROCESS PHASE
PLANNING PHASE
The SDGs are mainstreamed and territorialized
and integrated into national and regional plans,
it entails building national strategies and
frameworks that mainstream the SDGs in the
development agenda of the country. The main
institutions will produce roadmaps, undertake
consultations with stakeholder, and will finance
the budgets to priority sectors.
IMPLEMENTATION
Government agencies, after the planning, will
implement programs, projects, activities and
services that translate to SDG targets. This can
include national health campaigns, livelihood
training, advocacy and seminars, climate action
at the community level.
MONITORING
Monitoring is important since it will monitor the
progress of the initiatives and policies by
collecting data. This assists in detecting gaps and
measuring its impact over time.

• Philippine Statistics Authority. (PSA)

• National Economic and Development Authority. (NEDA)
• Commission on Human Rights. (CHR)
It also includes academic institutions that use national surveys,
statistics, and research to monitor and assess ongoing progress.
EVALUATION
Success, challenges and outcomes will be
evaluated in this stage to develop evidence-
based policy modifications. They usually
incorporate the feedback gathered from
partners and communities.

• Commission on Audit. (COA)

• National Economic and Development Authority. (NEDA)
• Civil Society Groups
These organizations will perform audits, assessments, and impact
studies for continuous and sustainable improvement..

CONCLUSION
The journey to achieve the Sustainable
Development Goals in the Philippines is a long-
term commitment that requires collaborative
efforts from government sectors, civil society,
and communities. Prioritizing SDGs that
address the country's most pressing
challenges, such as poverty alleviation (SDG 1),
access to quality education (SDG 4),
healthcare (SDG 3), decent work (SDG), peace
and justice (SDG 16), and climate action (SDG
13), is critical for ensuring a resilient, equitable,
and sustainable future. With clear institutional
duties, effective policies, and ongoing
monitoring, the Philippines may make
significant progress toward inclusive national
growth and global sustainability.
