 Teacher provides a model paragraph.

 Teacher gives students a checklist if necessary.
1. What happened?
2. Why did it happen?
3. What was the result?
4. What is happening now?
Pre-writing (15 minutes)

Warm-up (1 minute)

 Teacher greets the students and asks them how they are.

Lead-in (1 minute)

 Teacher talks about the flow of the course.

“Do you remember what we talked about last week? We learned some
new vocabulary about natural disaster. Today we are going to use those
vocabulary to write about them. But first let’s repeat vocabulary.”

Vocabulary practice (5 minutes)

 The teacher gives the students an activity to review the vocabulary

he/she taught previous course.
 In this activity, students match the names of natural disasters with
pictures.
“ Do you remember vocabulary that we learned last week right? Now
we match the names of the natural disaster with pictures. What is the
first one? (Second, third,...)

 Teacher writes vocabulary on the board and repeats the

pronunciation of each word. Then asks students to repeat.

Preparation for writing (8 minutes)

 Teacher ask questions to students about the unit.

1. Have you ever experienced a natural disaster?
2. Which one do you think is the most dangerous?
3. How do you think natural disasters occur?
 After talking about these questions, the teacher draws a table on
the board.
 The table includes “Natural disaster, reason (cause), and result
(effect)” titles.
 Teacher fills in the blanks in the table with the students.

Example:

Natural disaster Reason (cause) Result (effect)

Earthquake Ground shakes Building collapse.
suddenly People get injuired or
die.
...
Flood Heavy rain People lose their
homes or get hurt.
Cars float.
...
Avalanche Too much snows falls People and roads are
down the mountain covered with snow.
People get hurt.
...
Volcano Lava, hot vapour, ash The air becomes dirty
and gas coming out of with smoke and ash.
the ground Houses and trees burn
or disappear.
...

 After filling the blanks in the table, teacher gives students a writing
activity. The table above will guide students in the writing activity.

While-writing (15 minutes)

 Students use the table above and write short paragraph by using
“Because/So”.
 Students write the reasons and results of natural disasters in the
table.
 Students also write precatuions for the natural disaster they
chooseby using “Should/Should not.

“ Now you write a short paragraph about natural disaster. You use the
table on the board. Firstly, you introduce the disaster. Then write reasons
and results of the disaster by using “Because and so”. At the end of your
paragraph you write precatuions about natural disaster you choose by
using “Should or should not”.

Sample for students

An earthquake is a very dangerous natural disaster. It happens because

the ground shakes suddenly. Buildings fall down because they are not
strong enough. Many people get hurt or die, so it is important to be
prepared. Roads and bridges also get damaged, so traveling becomes
hard. People should build strong houses. They should also keep an
emergency bag at home so they can stay safe during an earthquake.

 Teacher walks around the class and check the students paragraphs.
 Some students share their paragraph with the class.

Post-writing (8 minutes)

 Teacher divide the class into small groups (2-3 students per group).
 Each group selects a natural disaster (e.g., earthquake, flood,
hurricane, wildfire).
 In their groups, students will write a short news report about their
chosen disaster using the reasons and results sentences they
created earlier in the lesson.
 Also students add more details to their news, such as the location of
the disaster

Example:

“ Good morning everyone. We have a natural disasters news. There was a

flood in the city of .... . Because there was heavy rain in the city previous
night. So people got hurt and cars were under the water. Thank you for
watching us. See you next news.”

 Then each grop choose one person to report the news.

 Students presents their news one by one.

Closure (2 minutes)

 Teacher summarizes the lesson.

“ What did you learn today?

Why natural disaster happen? You can say one of them.

What sould we do to be safe?”

 Teacher asks students if they have questions .

 Teacher ends the lesson.
