Omnivore s Dilemma By Michael Pollan

Omnivore s Dilemma Essay
Mr. Webb 5th period
8/27/14
Book Review In Michael Pollan s book The Omnivore s Dilemma he examines the main question
What should we have for dinner? (Page 1) He also examines the true meaning of food in today s
society. When we have just about any type of food available at our fingertips, it tends to cause a
dilemma, an omnivore s dilemma. We tend to make poor decisions due to the fact that we have so
many choices. To answer the question What should we have for dinner? Pollan decides that he needs
to know where food comes from. Through his journey Pollan discovers many problems with how
food is produced such as, food preservation techniques, and sanitary transportation. In the Omnivore s
Dilemma, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He likes to eat junk food and McDonald s just as much as the rest of us. He is telling the story of the
Omnivore s Dilemma from his own point of view because, just like the rest of us, he is an
omnivore. He is explaining our epic food dilemma so the readers can understand and relate to his
predicament. He does a good job of using real world examples, like a meal from McDonald s, to help
the readers see the problem, which is that we have absolutely no clue where our food comes from,
let alone what products make up our food.
Michael Pollan argument in the Omnivore s Dilemma is very convincing because he has
volunteered countless hours of his own time to find out where food comes from, and what
exactly the food is made from. He visits many different farms, and actually learns how food
begins its journey to his dinner plate by being curious to learn whom, and what [he d] find at the
far end of the food chain that keeps [him] alive. (Page 33) By meeting with and talking to the
owner of one of Iowa s most productive farms, Pollan learns all of the ins and outs of farming,
consequently learning the beginnings of his dinner. He even purchased his own cow, steer 534, to
track exactly where his food was going and how it was being processed. [He] wanted to follow one
of [the] steers through the life cycle. (Page 72) By purchasing his own steer, we see how committed
Pollan is to this project, and finding out exactly where our dinner
What Is The Purpose Of Illuminati
I believe the majority of you don t have knowledge about what illuminati stands for, others might
know what it symbolize but they ve never gone too deep into the subject to really understand its
purpose and how it works. I am going to start off by introducing you all to the basic definition of
illuminati.
Illuminati is a secret society of the world s most powerful and wealthiest citizens. Its ultimate goal
is to control the world and to build one big society full of Illuminists. We are ruled by it, we are
manipulated into believing what they want us to believe, into voting who they want to be the next
leader, into being what they want us to be. Illuminati isn t just this group of loaded ... Show more

Other (often more talented) musicians follow up on that trend and create their own version of the
new idea. Those musicians can be ordinary people like you and me, who have never been close to
Governmental Mind Control. Those musicians (and actors) don t have to be severely mind controlled
to unknowingly help out with the Agenda of the Elite. They just jump on the same train and the
snowball effect is starting. Thus, the Illuminati, who started the trend, can sit back and watch. We,
the citizens, are doing the rest for them.
5. Other gifted musicians and actors, who are creating art that goes outside the Agenda or against it
have no chance to get their message out broadly, because nobody at the top of the Industry (where
the money is) is willing to promote them. The International Bankers (The Illuminati) are the ones
who own the Industry. As soon as someone is creating something (may be music, a new label with
contrary ideas or something similar) that opposes what is next on the Agenda, the Illuminati is
quick to buy it out. If the Company refuses to sell, they are threatened. We all have seen Mafia
Movies. This is the way it is but on different
The Physics of Roller Coasters Essay
The Physics of Roller Coasters
The roller coaster has its beginnings in Russia where during the 1600 s. People crafted sleds out
of wood and built hills made of ice blocks. The hills had sand at the bottom to help slow down the
sleds so they would not crash when they reached the bottom of the hill.1 Over time, the roller
coaster has become more complex. They now are taller, faster and are designed out of different
materials like wood and steel. Although roller coasters are fun and exciting, the questions, what
allows them to twist and turn, go up and down hills at a fairly good speed? Why do they not fall
off of the track when it goes through a loop? The answer to these questions and others about roller
coasters lies in the application ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Then as the coaster begins its decent down the first hill, the energy is converted back into kinetic
energy as the train is pulled toward the Earth by gravity. Gravity is the traditional source of power
for roller coasters that accelerates the train as it goes on its hilly, twisty journey.3 Gravity is a unit
of acceleration, that is always present, that causes free falling objects on Earth to change their
speed at a rate of approximately 10 m/s (32ft/s) every second.1 So, as the train goes down the hills
of the track it has a positive acceleration giving it the necessary potential energy to climb the next
hill, make a turn, or travel through a loop.
Also, as the train goes down the hills and loops, it experiences a free fall effect.
This occurs when an object falls and is not inhibited by other objects2 (314 315). As the train goes
down the hill, the coasters mass causes it to accelerate faster than the people in the car. During the
free fall stages of the ride the train does not exert any pressure on the riders or the track causing the
riders to feel momentarily weightlessness. This is why the train has wheels on the bottom of the
track and the passengers of the train have some sort of restraining device to hold them into their
seats.3 So, as the train goes down the hill it is actually falling, causing the velocity of the train to
increase due to the
The Military Of The United States
The Military
In today s military, we are experiencing more changes than ever before. The United States has
separated forces, added forces and changed rules and regulations to adapt with the times. As we
grow and advance so does our military. That is part of the reason they are so great, but it has its
downfalls as well. The military is not only changing the way we operate, but who does the
operating, honestly they have their hand in aspect of life and I will name only a few. They have
also made a huge impact on the economy, gender roles and the controversy between the roles, and
they are taking control in more ways than we think. September 29, 1789, is when the first official
military was created. We already had the Continental Army that had fought the British in the
American Revolution, but this was not an official Army. So in September of 1789 Congress sat
down its first session and established the first official military and it was passed the last day of its
first session. The United States Air Force became a separate military service September 1947; this is
when the Department of Defense was established (previously known as the National military
Establishment.) The department of Defense was encompassed the Army, Navy, and the new branch
the Air Force. The Air Force Expeditionary Force (AEF) created in the late 1990s which allowed
active duty, reserve, and air National Guard to serve together; this allowed the forces to join together
and complete missions, instead of
Sitting Bull Essay
Andy Warhol s 2 D silkscreen print, Sitting Bull, is a very popular and controversial print from
his series Cowboys and Indians. The print is representational, based on an original archival photo
of the Sioux Chief, Sitting Bull. In the original photograph and print, the Chief is posing for a
headshot photo, with a calm facial expression and stance. In the print, the artist chose to make the
chief s skin light blue, his dress bright red, his hair dark blue, and his shape is outlined in yellow,
white and blue. As for most of Warhol s Pop style pieces, the photo was redesigned by the artist to
be printed in vivid colors and showcases a lightly colored outline of his body and shape, giving the
original photo a modern touch. The artist s work was printed using the silkscreen printingprocess on
a 36 inch by 36 inch Lenox Museum Board paper (Sitting Bull 376, 2016). Sitting Bull is great
representation of the artist s style. Andy Warhol was a very successful illustrator and designer in
New York City, where he and other artists developed the concept of Pop art, the style in which he
is famous for, and the style he chose to recreate Sitting Bull (Andy Warhol Biography, 2016). Pop
art is a modern style of art in which the subject matter is commonplace objects and people of
everyday life, seeking to elevate the culture of the time and straying away from traditional themes
such as mythology or religion. Warhol was a pioneer of contemporary art and really had a great
impact on the
Baseball Is America s National Pastime
The argument over which sport is originally Americas national past time is as enduring and intense
as American sports themselves. Each and every week millions of people tune in to watch their
favorite sports being played. Over the years baseball has traditionally been known as the national
pastime among all sports, but the rich tradition and history behind baseballis still around and noticed,
with that being said, baseball is still referred to as America s national pastime. This can be attributed
to many factors including a superior television product, more controlled violence, and legalized
gambling with fantasy football and baseball.
Each and every week millions of Americans tune in to watch their favorite sports. Basketball,
baseball, football, golf, soccer, and racing all have a place and a market with the sports fans in
America. Over the past two decades, baseball has been left behind while football has become
America s new national pastime (Kendrick, Scott. Baseball s Origins An Illustrated History Of
Baseball. Baseball.about.com. N.p., n.d. Web. 07 Oct. 2015. Page.2). According to Steve Rushin,
a respected writer for Sports Illustrated, to say football has displaced baseball as the national
pastime is laughably inadequate, like saying that TV has edged quilting as a popular diversion (
History: Birth of Pro Football. History: Birth of Pro Football. N.p., n.d. Web. 21 Oct. 2015. Page.1).
although baseball is still referred to as America s national pastime,
COPD Research Paper
What is COPD?
COPD is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is an advanced heart disease that makes it hard
to breathe. Advanced means the disease get worse over the time. COPD affect the lungs, the air
that you breathe goes down your windpipe into tubes in your lungs called bronchial tubes or airway.
This airways and air sacs are elastic, when you breathe in; each air sac fills up with air like a small
balloon and when you breathe out, the air sacs collapse and the air goes out. The air you breathe in
is oxygen and the air you breathe out is carbon dioxide. In COPD, less air flows in and out of the
airways because of one or more of the following reasons:
The airways and air sacs had lost their elasticity.

you with the program that can help you to quit, and avoid other lungs irritants. There are also
medications that can help to relieve your symptoms like bronchodilators depending on the severity
of your COPD, as there is short acting and long acting bronchodilators. These bronchodilators are
used through inhaler which helps to deliver the medicine into your lungs. If your COPD is severe

Preventing the Influenza Virus in School aged Children
Tracy Bell
Community College of Baltimore County
Children rely on the decisions that are made by responsible individuals in their lives including
parents, caretakers, and other authorities such as teachers. Because children depend on others so
heavily, health issues that affect children such as contracting the influenza virus or the flu should be
discussed with the adults in their lives. Every year a new strain of the influenza virus affects the
health of school aged children causing a potential health risk to themselves and others around them.

One way to help stop the spread of the influenza virus is through receiving yearly vaccinations.
Every year through predictions, a group of scientists help drug companies develop vaccines for
the approaching influenza season (Surviving the flu season, 2016). Due to the importance of
receiving the vaccine there should be a plan in place that makes this vaccine more accessible to
all individuals especially the younger population. A start could be partnering with the local
medical community to initiate school vaccination programs. Having a nationwide program
advocate for kids that do not have a primary doctors, insurance, or means or transportation to get
to a clinic to be vaccinated would be highly beneficial. School based health clinics can be
successful because kids are already in one central location around ninety two to ninety eight percent
are in attendance at school on average (Herbert, Gargano, Painter, Sales, Morfaw, Murray,
DiClemente, Hughes, 2013). In addition, having kids get vaccinated at the same time could prevent
influenza cases, and decrease medical care cost for families. School age kids also remain carriers of
the virus for an extended period of time, therefore targeting school aged kids is critical to helping
minimize the spread of the influenza virus in the community (Herbert et al., 2013). Additionally,
having all students vaccinated can minimize the severity
Art Deco Research Paper Outline
The Art Deco movement started in Europe, in the mid 1920 s and continued through the 1930 s as
counterpose to Art Nouveau. Its first exhibition was in Paris, in 1925, at the Exposition
Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes. Originally intender for architecture and
decorative arts, this style quickly gained a lot of popularity through the whole continent and spread
to America, where we can find one of its biggest and most representational expressions in the
Chrysler Building, in New York.
Even though Art Deco initially was an architectural style, it didn t take long for this tendency to
expand to other types of arts and crafts, and typography was definitely not an exception. In 1929,
the commercial poster artist and typeface designer A.M Cassandre was commissioned by
Dubonnete to create a series of posters to promote their wine. Cassandre then created the first Art
Deco type in the world, Bifur. This completely new typeface evoked the principals of Art Deco, it
was highly geometrical, built mainly by straight lines, with a strong emphasis on its verticality, and
it combined really thick, bold lines with several ultra thin ones. The posters and the typestyle
became a major hit and more typefaces started to pop up all over the world. ... Show more content on

This movement aimed to take the decorative patterns away from natural shapes and into the modern
world. Art Deco, in architecture as in typography, aimed for a more industrial, futuristic appearance,
while remaining elegant and glamorous looking. It was a perfect font for display and advertising. It
was new and stylish, irrefutably eye catching and became an icon for the Twenties, and, later on, the
Thirties. Posters, book covers, logos, advertisements, anything you can imagine was using this

Innocent Voices, explains the 1980s civil war that started in a small country called El Salvador,
through Chava s (Carlos Padilla) eyes. The conflict between the Salvadoran army and the peasants
over their land put Chava s mother (Leonor Varela) under much stress, taking care of his sister and
younger brother through the horror of murder and bloodshed.
Cuscantanzingo was one of the last villages trapped between the guerrilla s and the army.
Chava s life seemed to be at an end, but, was fortunately saved by the rebels, to be taken away to
America to have a good life. The fate of many misfortunate children was set on a path of murder,
warfare, and suffering (CNS Movie Review: Innocent Voices).
These are not adults, just children trying to live their lives, only to be seized by the government
army. Based on a true story, Innocent Voices is a tragic story of a young boy in the 1980s,
growing up in El Salvador. The Salvadorans started fighting between the government troops, it was
a daily life for these people. Chava s father abandoned him and his family, left to take care of his
mother, brother, and sister while they tried to maintain a normal life by day, finding coverage by

The ring tones firms, which enables people to listen to popular music is at the moment a five dollar
billion market every year, an enlightening case of an ancillary industry resulting from the use of a
mobile phone.
Minor firms now market cell phone games as well as video content aimed specifically to be watched
on cell phones. Additionally, other creative functions have arisen, such as text messaging, short
messages service (SMS) , as well as fake talking (people pretend to converse using cell phones to
fight fear and loneliness). Despite the presence of moderately small screen sizes, majority of the
people in America have started watching TV on their cell phones, this is to distance themselves
from the wrong or jam packed situations and also prioritize their attention. Regardless of the
widespread recognition of the cell phones video technology, consumers are still cautious of two
way video, caused by anxieties about privacy and surveillance. The political sector in America
has also changed tremendously as a result of cell phones. Cell phones have been utilized to
mobilize followers of political causes. Protesters use their cell phones to send text messages to
organize activities and also to avoid the police. Cell Phones are proven to harm in a way too, like
texting and driving is one .Every year, about 421,000 people are injured in crashes that have

The Buddha Is Staying On Indasala Cave
The Buddha is staying in Indasala Cave. The sutta identifies the exact location of this cave on Mount
Vediya, near a village called Ambasanda, east of Rajagaha, in the country of Magadha. I can do no
better than to quote the description on the Buddhanet website:
This remote and beautiful cave is the place where the Buddha delivered one of his most profound
discourses, the Sakkapanha Sutta. He also uttered verses 206, 207 and 208 of the Dhammapada
while staying here. Followers of Tibetan Buddhism will be interested to know that Buddhasrijnana,
the famous commentator on the Guhyasamaja Tantra also once lived in this cave. The Indasala
Cave is at the base of a sheer cliff halfway up the side of Giriyek Mountain....
There are two other things of interest in this area. At the end of the mountain you will notice a
flight of stairs leading to a cave where an old swami lives. He doesn t speak English but he is a
mellow old fellow and friendly to visitors. Further up on the very top of the mountain is the Hansa
Stupa, the most complete still existing in India. It is a difficult climb through the thorn bushes but
offers a fine view. Hiuen Tsiang visited this stupa and recorded the interesting story behind its
construction.
This sutta is another segue from sutta 18, in which Sakka and ultimately Sanatkumara, in the form
of the young boy Pancasikha, presided over a council of the devas of the realm of the 33 gods.
Sakka resolves to visit the Buddha and, discerning his location,
Gargoyles Research Paper
Gargoyles were defining elements of the Gothic period, constructed primarily by Elliot Viollet Le
Duc in the 19th century as part of a restoration project of the Notre Dame Cathedral. Gargoyles
served as a political commentary of the times, and a functional purpose of protecting the Cathedral.
The most iconic gargoyle, the Pensive Demon, sits atop Notre Dame Cathedral s South tower. This
statue is actually a chimera, not a gargoyle, since it isn t functional to the building and is purely
decor. Also referred to as the Melancholy Demon or Le Stryge, which according to mythology, is a
half woman, half bird demon that seeks to harm children, found prominently in cemeteries . Le
Stryge was made in the 19th century during which time a hierarchy... Show more content on

In the middle ages, gargoyles were the subject of pagan and demonic conversation , but for
Viollet le Duc they represented salvation, protection, and the soul of the building. Gargoyles that
sat near the great bells provided amplification of sound when they went off, an important function
that told citizens when to awake or pray . Viollet le Duc was appalled at the actions of the rebels
that recklessly tore down the old gargoyles and replaced them with lead pipes, which proved
ineffective and caused significant water damage to the cathedral. Gargoyles served a very
important purpose of steering water out of the cathedral along with being artistically sound.
While researching, Viollet le Duc realized how useful it is to multiply gargoyles in masses so that
the drainage system would be perfected. Limestone was a material that could be cut into long,
thin shapes and would further accentuate decorative qualities of the gargoyles, along with
helping to anchor the building and provide extra support . Viollet le Duc insisted on proving the
gargoyles functionality to a point of absurdity. He created gargoyles that held pots to further steer
water away. He also formulated canopies for the gargoyles, during a time where canopies were
reserved for saints and holy purposes. Viollet le Duc either found his gargoyles to be sacred, or he
was further making fun of religion and its symbolism and his distaste for it . All of these elements
prove a point that Viollet le Duc s main goal was preservation of the structure after restoration, and
he found gargoyles to be the most modern and functional elements of its gothic
